There are several tripod head types, from the common Arca Swiss tripod head, to a niche panoramic tripod head, all of which require a plate to fix the camera securely to the head.
3 way heads (also called ‘pan tilt’) offer the highest level of control when pointing the camera, with each separate lever controlling movement along an axis independently.
