Our Verdict

The release of this micro four thirds super telephoto lens will create a stir in sports, wildlife and bird photography communities. Not only is the design extremely compact and lightweight, but the lens delivers class leading image stabilisation with up to 8 EV stops of compensation. This combination allows photographers to work through lower light levels when still hand holding the lens, or whilst it is perched on a monopod. Despite weighing only 1.8kg Olympus employs a design with 28 optical elements arranged in 18 groups, which is capable of capturing extremely sharp and high contrast images.

Focal lengths of 300-1000mm are unheard of in full frame lens offerings, clearly demonstrating an area where the micro four thirds system shines. Adding OM-D E-M1X firmware vs 2 update allows the camera’s AF system to recognise birds even when in foliage, which will be of great appeal to relevant users. An optional MC-20 teleconverter will extend the reach of the lens to an unprecedented 2000mm in full frame terms, opening up entire new avenues to long range photographers. Completing the design with outdoor weather protection from dust and rain to heat will allow photographers to continue working in a diverse range of conditions.
