There are several tripod head types, from the common Arca Swiss tripod head, to a niche panoramic tripod head, all of which require a plate to fix the camera securely to the head.

3 way heads (also called ‘pan tilt’) offer the highest level of control when pointing the camera, with each separate lever controlling movement along an axis independently. Levers are rotated, twisted, then locked into place when the desired angle is achieved. Often these are used by studio photographers and for portraits.

Ball heads are the most popular type, as they present a flexible option for most styles of photography and video. Ball heads are usually the most compact option, with excellent camera manoeuvrability. Outdoor photographers often choose a ball head thanks to excellent weight to load ratios and compact sizes. Refined movements can sometimes feel somewhat haphazard however, when precision control is required. This can make macro and certain other types of photography tricky, in which case a geared tripod head may be preferable.

Another option is a fluid head, which are ideal for birding, wildlife and moviemaking, as they are often geared or damped for smooth panning. Gimbals fall into this category, which can support the largest, heaviest telephoto lenses for sports, action and wildlife photography.

Browse for a mini tripod to use when travelling, vlogging or shooting selfies, or save in our used tripod range. Customers enjoy free delivery on orders over £50 for everything from a Manfrotto tripod head to spiked feet and other accessories.
