Canon EOS C50 Cinema Camera Summary
Designed for independent videographers and small production companies, the next-generation Canon EOS C50 Cinema Camera meets the creative needs of moviemakers from everyday shooting and streaming to professional video production.
This is Canon’s smallest and lightest video camera to date, which bridges the gap between the EOS R mirrorless camera range and high-end professional video products, providing all of the tools independent filmmakers need without the expense of dedicated models like the EOS C400 RF Mount Camera. It’s also the smallest ever EOS Cinema Camera, enabling easier rigging, and filming handheld or from a gimbal stabiliser.
It boasts a brand-new full-frame 32MP sensor for high-quality video and stills, new workflow-friendly video features, and a new body design for added versatility. Its movie capabilities are impressive with 7K 60p full-frame video, Open Gate internal 12-bit RAW recording, and Canon’s latest Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with EOS iTR AF X. Oversampled 4K (from 7K) is available, along with HFR recording 4K up to 120fps and 2K up to 180fps. Filmmakers can choose profiles from a number of Canon Log and RAW options, with active cooling, full-size XLR inputs, and comprehensive connectivity to suit even the most demanding client productions.
It also includes advanced hybrid capabilities with the ability to capture 32MP stills, shoot at speeds of up to 40fps continuous burst with the electronic shutter, and record a variety of stills formats including RAW, C-RAW, JPEG, and HEIF.
Despite being the smallest pro cinema camera ever, the EOS C50 packs a full-frame sensor with 7K 60p video, has a removable top handle with various functions, and features professional tools such as Timecode, HDMI Type-A, and multiple accessory mounts.

Canon EOS C50 Cinema Camera Body in More Detail
Full‑frame Sensor
This camera is a video-first hybrid cinema camera with a 7K / 32MP full‑frame sensor that delivers rich detail, excellent low‑light performance with low noise and wide dynamic range, at burst speeds of up to 40 fps in electronic shutter mode.
This is ideal for video-first hybrid creators and small production crews who benefit from 35mm field of view with high resolution photo and video capabilities, allowing newcomers to take their content to the next stage, while navigating the complex world of moviemaking.
Smallest and Lightest Cinema EOS Body
This is the most compact of all Canon video cameras to come out. The smaller size measures approximately 84.5mm high x 142mm wide, which is also lighter at just 665g, which makes it easier to handle whether shooting handheld, on a gimbal, or with a cage.
The compact design is modular too and includes multiple accessory mounting points and professional control. There’s a removable top handle with 2x XLRs for added flexibility when using compact rigs, and the body includes a mount-adapter attachment and a zoom lever for smooth, adjustable zoom control from the camera and remotely. In total there are 14 assignable buttons so you can customise the camera to suit any project.
Canon’s 21-pin Multi-Function Shoe is available for mounting a flash unit and other compatible accessories, while the removable handle includes an accessory shoe, a microphone holder, and an audio control dial, as well as a zoom rocker and REC button.
Additional body terminals include:
- Timecode (DIN)
- USB Type C
- Microphone port
- Headphone jack
- HDMI Type A out
- Remote control (E3)
Recording and Zoom Features
Both the body and removable handle include a REC button and zoom lever for smooth, precise zoning while handling the camera securely. The REC button and zoom lever are conveniently located, while a Tally Lamp on the front and rear of the body, plus the front of the handle provide clear recording status for the talent and any team members.
7K 60p Video and 32MP Photo
Recording in 7K 60p allows you to crop in post or stabilise footage while maintaining high-resolution detail. Various formats and resolutions are available, including oversampled 4K from 7K, HFR 4K up to 120fps, and 2K up to 180fps. Internal RAW recording is also an option using Canon’s Cinema RAW Light, XF-AVC, XF-AVC S, and XF-HEVC S. This means that you can shoot 12-bit Cinema RAW Light up to 7K 60p, plus 4K 120p and 2K 180p and oversampled 4K 10-bit XF-AVC (MXF) and XF-AVC S/XF-HEVC S (MP4).
Benefits of these formats include enhanced MP4 recording with professional filenames, folder structure, and metadata capture. Filenames also include additional information such as camera index, reel number, and clip number, enabling easier organisation of footage. Frame metadata is also retained, including position and gyro data, which can be used for post-production stabilisation.
The combination of high-resolution video and stills is ideal for solo filmmakers who need to capture both stills and movie media as efficiently as possible.
Open Gate Video Recording
The Canon EOS C50 is the first Canon model to support Open Gate internal 12-bit RAW video recording, which captures the full area of the sensor rather than cropping to standard 16:9 or similar video aspect ratios. This allows filmmakers to record the whole frame, providing greater latitude for reframing in post, in order to deliver content across multiple formats, including vertical, widescreen, and square formats.
Alongside Open Gate, the EOS C50 supports Simultaneous Crop Recording, Anamorphic Support, which creates a wider, cinematic aspect ratio by optically squeezing the image horizontally.
Professional Audio Capabilities
Dual XLR inputs and dedicated audio control dials are located on the hand unit for professional-level audio recording. The camera includes an internal stereo mic, as well as microphone terminal with four audio inputs in total, for the most versatile sound capture possible.
Two standard 3-pin XLR inputs with 48V phantom power and a mic terminal allow the connection of video microphones while independent audio controls are available with two channel adjustment simultaneously.
Multi-function Shoe
Canon’s Multi-function Shoe allows you to pair a digital mic with optional XLR adapter for direct digital audio transmission for uncompromising sound quality. It supports 2-channel, 24-bit recording for the highest production level when using a microphone such as the Canon DM-E1D Multi-Function Shoe Directional Stereo Microphone or the Tascam CA-XLR2d XLR Microphone Adapter.
Active cooling and advanced heat management
Heat dissipation is improved compared to the original EOS R5 C. This is due to a redesigned internal airflow and front air intake, which means that, despite the camera’s compact size, it is able to deliver reliable performance for long-form content, as expected from a professional EOS Cinema Camera.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology with EOS iTR AF X
The Canon EOS C50 features Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with EOS iTR AF X, delivering fast and accurate face, head, and eye detection, even when a subject turns away from the camera. This enables smooth focus transitions, reliable subject tracking across the frame, and precise shifting of focus between points of interest while maintaining sharp results throughout.
The autofocus system works seamlessly with Canon RF mount lenses, providing faster communication between the camera and lens. This results in quicker focus acquisition, improved tracking performance, and enhanced responsiveness when working with moving subjects.
Live Multi-Cam Action
Take full control with Canon XC Protocol accessories and apps such as RC-IP1000 and Multi-Camera Control. Oversee multi-camera studios with timecode sync, and adjust settings / shading across Cinema EOS, PTZ, and XF Series cameras in real time.
RF Mount Lenses
With the RF mount, the EOS C50 is compatible with Canon’s growing lineup of RF lenses, which offer cutting-edge optical performance and handling. The camera also supports the wide range of EF mount lenses via an EF-EOS R adapter, as well as PL lenses, allowing you to use primes, VR, and cinema optics to suit any content.
When using a Canon RF mount adapter, such as the PL-RF Lens Mount Adapter or Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, lockable plates secure the adapter with four screws for greater stability, even when shooting with larger lenses. The body is also compatible with the Extender RF 1.4x, Extender RF 2.0x, and drop-in filter mount adapters, which include the Circular Polarising Filter A For EF-EOS R Mount.
This level of versatility is complemented by the zoom rocker on the handle and the zoom lever on the body, providing control over focal lengths from prime or zoom lenses across various mounts.
EOS VR System Support
With VR lens support, 180º VR shooting is possible when using options such as the Canon RF 5.2mm F/2.8L Dual Fisheye VR Lens. Canon’s VR software and a Premier Pro plugin provide a streamlined workflow even when recording with the single sensor, without needing post-shoot stitching.
Network Functionality
App-based live streaming, data transfer, and remote control are available to streamline editing and shooting workflows. Canon has added UVC/UAC support with up to 60p streaming, as well as live streaming over IP, using Wi-Fi or Ethernet via an IP decoder or a PC.
Remote control and multi-camera control use the XC protocol, again via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, when using a remote camera control app.
Camera to Cloud with frame.io allows for instant backup, collaboration, and remote working, with cloud access directly from the camera over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Content professionals can also transfer data through FTP/FTPS/SFTP servers.
BG-R20 Battery Grip Compatibility
When adding the optional Canon BG-R20 Battery Grip, users benefit from two additional LP-E6P/LP-E6NH battery packs for longer recording sessions. It also enables USB charging and power supply via the PD-E2.

Our Verdict
The arrival of the Canon EOS C50 heralds a new versatile cinema camera for solo creators and small crews. It boasts the smallest ever Cinema EOS size and is very lightweight, despite offering professional, video-first hybrid capabilities.
The modular body features a removable XLR handle with audio and zoom controls, multiple accessory mounting points, and terminals that support professional video productions. It is centred around a full-frame 7K sensor, enabling high-resolution video and stills capture, with Open Gate recording for the first time on a Cinema EOS body.
It bridges the gap between Canon’s entire line of mirrorless, PowerShot, and Cinema EOS cameras, combining portability with convenience from features like the zoom lever, grip support, and Canon’s 21-pin Multi-Function Shoe.
The new sensor offers the speed to tackle up to 180fps HFR recording or 4K 120fps, alongside a blistering 40fps electronic shutter mode for stills. With onboard live streaming and VR lens support, filmmakers can produce unique content for remote audiences as well as traditional client shoots such as weddings, corporate videos, and multi-platform video content with Open Gate.
If you’re transitioning to client content, there’s no better option from Canon than the EOS C50, especially with its RF mount providing the versatility to shoot with cutting-edge mirrorless lenses, PL mount lenses, and EF mount lenses with secure adapter compatibility.
