Medium Format Cameras

Digital medium format cameras are often regarded as the epitome of photographic quality. Medium format sensors are larger than those found in all other digital cameras. With a lower pixel density, each pixel captures more light, which is one of the defining attributes of cleaner, high quality digital images. Users have tended to be portrait, fashion, landscape and product photographers. However with the rise of smaller, more user-friendly and affordable camera models, other photographers are now embracing this format in order to achieve the highest possible output.

Manufacturers of medium format include the Leica S, Hasselblad, Fujifilm GFX system and Pentax 645 cameras. These are some of the highest quality digital cameras available in the world today, with sensors that are larger than those found in full-frame 35mm DSLR's.

These larger sensors are capable of delivering unparalleled image quality thanks in part to compatible medium format lenses, with each brand designing optics for their own systems. Lenses feature extremely high quality optics, providing edge-to-edge sharpness with excellent resolving power as required for ultra high resolution capture. On the whole, these lenses will tend to be slightly larger and heavier than mirrorless or DSLR equivalents. In part this is due to the extra optical elements required. Despite this, the highly desirable ‘look and feel’ of the results will overcome any size or weight penalty.

Visit the 500px medium format portrait gallery for some stunning examples of what is possible with these systems, including examples from different camera brands. Many of world’s best known and highest paid professional photographers use medium format systems today, which is a testament to the quality they are able to attain.

These systems are rapidly becoming more compact, portable, and versatile, which is allowing photographers from all genres to experience the quality which is available. Street photographers, architectural and wedding photographers are amongst a few. Where medium format is perhaps not so suitable is for fast moving subjects such as sports and actions, due in part to slower focus mechanisms and lower burst rates.

Park Cameras are proud to provide a comprehensive range of options for photographers seeking these cameras, with expertly trained staff available to answer any questions as well as two retail stores with models available for demonstration.
