Hasselblad X2D II 100C Medium Format Camera Summary

With updates both inside and out, the Hasselblad X2D II 100C Medium Format Camera Body arrives just 2.5 years after the original 100MP model from Swedish image masters Hasselblad. This second-generation medium format X System camera has been refined with a lighter design, a new grip, and a stylish graphite grey finish, but it’s the internal technology that pushes the envelope even further.

Upgrades to this model include a brand-new AF system, which enables much faster autofocus and subject tracking for humans, vehicles, cats, and dogs. The new system combines hybrid PDAF, CDAF, and LiDAR detection for speed and accuracy, and a new continuous AF-C mode has been added, which delivers reliable subject tracking, using a combination of 425 PDAF zones to maximise image quality from the 100MP Medium Format BSI CMOS Sensor.

This is complemented by an upgraded 5-axis in-body stabilisation system that now achieves an impressive 10 stops of compensation against camera shake. The IBIS allows you to shoot handheld for several seconds and achieve tack-sharp results without a tripod, drawing out incredible detail from the medium format sensor.

The camera uses Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution with High Dynamic Range (HNCS HDR), which achieves exceptional colour accuracy, offers 16-bit colour and 281 trillion tones, while maintaining a native ISO 50 and wide 15.3 stops of dynamic range. This is also the first medium format camera with true end-to-end HDR 3, which is ideal for professional applications such as weddings, portraits, fashion, landscapes, architecture, and any subject where resolution and colour accuracy are paramount.

The X2D II 100C features high-speed 1TB SSD internal storage, which can be complemented by a CFexpress Type B memory card for maximum speed and capacity.

Both the electronic viewfinder and OLED tilt touchscreen offer a crystal-clear, high-resolution view of the scene, with bright, brilliant screens for reviewing images and playback. Hasselblad has also updated the Phocus Mobile 2 app to enable viewing, editing, and applying HNCS HDR processing to RAW files, as well as image transfer even when the camera is powered off, significantly speeding up your workflow.

Hasselblad X2D II 100C Camera in More Detail

Brilliance at Every Moment

The Hasselblad X2D II 100C builds on the success of its predecessor, combining a 100MP BSI CMOS sensor (11,656 x 8,742px) with Hasselblad’s Natural Colour Solution and High Dynamic Range (HNCS HDR). It delivers unrivalled image quality with 16-bit colour depth, capturing up to 281 trillion tones from a native ISO 50 and 15.3 stops of dynamic range for exceptional accuracy in highlights and shadows.

For the first time in a medium format camera, true end-to-end HDR 3 processing is supported. HDR HEIF and Ultra HDR JPEG files are generated directly in-camera, which are ready for assessing on the 1400-nit HDR OLED tilt touchscreen or sharing instantly to HDR-compatible platforms. Whether capturing portraits, landscapes, architecture, or fashion, the results are detailed, natural, and consistently colour-accurate, reducing the need for extensive editing during post processing.

Faster, Smarter Autofocus

A completely redesigned autofocus system uses a combination of hybrid PDAF, CDAF, and LiDAR for faster, more precise focusing. There are 425 PDAF zones spread across the 100MP sensor, enabling accurate subject detection and tracking for humans, vehicles, cats, and dogs.

The new AF-C continuous focus mode 2 locks onto moving subjects in a breeze, while in AF-S mode, 425 PDAF zones that spread over the 100-megapixel sensor work with the LiDAR for fast, accurate focusing. An integrated AF illuminator improves low-light performance and doubles as a self-timer indicator, making focusing faster and more reliable in all environments.

Advanced 5-Axis, 10-Stop Image Stabilisation

The updated in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) system offers up to 10 stops of compensation, which is 8x more effective than the original X2D 100C. This allows handheld exposures lasting several seconds without introducing motion blur. Long-exposure shots of flowing water, city traffic, or night skies are now possible without the need to rely on a tripod.

High-Resolution Imaging and File Options

With its 100MP BSI CMOS sensor the X2D II captures images at up to 11,656 x 8,742 pixels with RAW (3FR 14/16-bit), JPEG, and HEIF file formats supported. HDR HEIF and Ultra HDR JPEG are processed directly in-camera for quicker turnaround, while individual RAW files average 206MB for the greatest quality and editing flexibility.

When paired with Hasselblad’s XCD lens range, including the brand new XCD 35-100mm f/2.8-4 E Lens, users gain access to compact, high-resolution optics with integrated leaf shutters and full in-camera corrections.

Average file sizes:

  • RAW 206MB
  • JPG 32MB
  • HDR JPG 40MB
  • HEIF 20MB
  • HDR HEIF 28MB

Viewing and Handling

The camera features a 3.6-inch OLED tilt touchscreen with HDR support, 1400-nit peak brightness, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and full P3 wide colour gamut coverage. Complementing this is a 5.76M-dot electronic viewfinder with 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification for incredibly precise framing and image review.

Hasselblad’s refinements to the ergonomics make the X2D II 7.5% lighter than the previous model at 840g with a battery. Alongside this is a redesigned grip for improved handholding, an updated matte graphite-grey finish, 5D joystick, and eight customisable buttons, that enhance overall comfort and usability of this compact medium format body.

Phocus Mobile 2

The updated Phocus Mobile 2 app extends the camera’s HDR workflow to iPhone and iPad, allowing users to view, edit, and transfer RAW HDR images directly to the smart device. Hasselblad Natural Noise Reduction (HNNR) can be applied to improve detail in low-light images, while end-to-end HDR rendering preserves full colour and tonal range, catering to the very latest workflows.

The app also supports remote wake-up and wireless transfers, enabling images to be downloaded even when the camera is switched off.

The X2D II features a generous 1TB internal SSD, which is capable of storing approximately 50,000 HEIF images, alongside a CFexpress Type B memory card slot that supports optional cards of up to 512GB for high-speed, high-resolution workflows.

The camera is powered by a 3400mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery, which delivers up to 327 shots (CIPA) or around 466 shots in optimised mode. Additionally, USB-C 30W fast charging enables a full charge in approximately two hours (with the included USB-C Cable).

Looking to sell your Hasselblad X2D II 100C Medium Format Camera?

Our Verdict

The Hasselblad X2D II 100C is a significant upgrade over the original camera, with refinements to both handling and performance, while introducing powerful new features for professionals and serious photography enthusiasts. The 100MP BSI CMOS sensor remains at the heart of the system, but colour reproduction has been elevated with Hasselblad’s Natural Colour Solution and true end-to-end HDR 3 processing. This allows HDR HEIF and Ultra HDR JPEG files to be generated in-camera, which makes this the first medium format camera to integrate an HDR 3 end-to-end workflow.

One of the biggest improvements comes from the redesigned autofocus system, which now combines PDAF, CDAF, and LiDAR for faster, more accurate focusing. With 425 focus zones and subject detection for humans, vehicles, cats, and dogs, the addition of continuous AF-C tracking makes this generation camera far more capable at capturing various moving subjects.

Likewise an updated 5-axis IBIS significantly improves performance, with up to 10 stops of stabilisation, enabling longer handheld exposures while completely eliminating the need for a tripod in many situations. The X2D II handles high-volume and high-end workflows with greater ease thanks to its 1TB of internal SSD storage, an optional CFexpress Type B card, and fast USB-C 3.1 connectivity.

It also features improved ergonomics, a lighter body, a premium EVF and OLED tilt touchscreen, as well as seamless integration with Phocus Mobile 2 for editing and wireless transfer. The camera feels like a major leap for professional photographers working in fields such as portraits, weddings, landscapes, fashion, and of course fine art or image reproduction where class-leading image quality and colour accuracy are essential.
