Continuous Lighting

Continuous lighting offers some advantages over traditional sync flash lighting, for both stills photography and video. It is akin to shooting in steady, natural light. This allows the photographer to take the guesswork out of shooting in a studio and speeds up the workflow by showing where shadows are going to fall on the subject's face. Any corrections or light modifications can be made before the image is taken.

Some of the lights offer the ability to control colour temperature, allowing greater flexibility and ability to control colour casts. Many studio photographers use a colour calibration card to accurately gauge white balance, together with a light meter for perfect exposure settings.

There are three main continuous lighting bulbs, which give off a slightly different colour and have different properties. These are fluorescent, tungsten and the modern LED type.

Complete lighting kits are also available which incorporate various bits of equipment ideal for starting out with artificial lighting. A kit will generally include everything needed to get started including lighting stands, power packs, modifiers and carry cases.
