Choose based on how you shoot

For landscapes, compare rigidity and a comfortable working height. With a long lens, the support needs to handle the weight without making small adjustments difficult. For macro, check how low the tripod goes and how easily you can position the camera.

Travel adds another consideration: the weight and folded length you’ll carry. Check those measurements against your bag or luggage before choosing.

Carbon fibre generally weighs less than aluminium in a comparable design, but leg construction and head choice matter too. Aluminium can offer better value if you rarely carry your tripod far.

Choosing a head

Ball heads allow quick positioning for stills. Geared heads make small, precise adjustments easier, which can be useful for architecture and close-up work.

For moving video shots, a fluid head provides controlled resistance when panning and tilting. Check its supported load range and counterbalance options against your camera and lens combination.

Complete kits include legs and a head. Buying separately gives you more choice, but check the fittings and include both parts in your budget.

Travel tripod or larger support?

A compact folded size is useful, but compare working height and stability as well. A tripod that needs its centre column fully extended to reach eye level may be less steady than one that reaches the same height on its legs alone.

Check maximum and minimum height, payload, folded length and total weight. Include the head’s weight if it’s listed separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is carbon fibre worth the extra?

It can be if you carry your tripod regularly. Compare similar models to see the actual weight saving. If most of your work is near home or in a studio, aluminium may leave more budget for a better head.

What should I check before buying?

Weigh your heaviest camera-and-lens combination, then check the limits of both the legs and head. Compare usable height as well as maximum height, and confirm what’s included in the price.

Do I need a different head for video?

For smooth pans and tilts, a fluid video head is usually the better choice. If the camera stays locked in one position throughout the recording, your existing stills head may be sufficient.

Will travel models be included?
