Off Camera Flash
Off camera flash techniques can vastly improve the way in which artificial lighting affects any portrait or scene being captured. This technique requires flash triggers and receivers (sometimes referred to as commanders or transceivers) and often a tripod or light stand to hold extra flashguns. Light can be directed precisely where required and shaped using diffusers and soft boxes for highly professional results. There are a wide variety of triggers available for setting off remote flashguns which fall into two main categories – wireless radio triggers and cable triggers.
Cable triggers are an excellent and affordable way of taking your flashgun away from your camera and experimenting with lighting angles. Cables are however limited with the distance at which they can function.
Wireless radio triggers can operate over significant distances and allow photographers to roam freely away from their lighting set-up. This is ideal when shooting larger scenes or a distance away from the subject. Applications for off camera flash include outdoor location photography, estate agent images and all manner of portraits.
Many lifestyle portrait images, family photographs and other common subjects appear to be extremely professional because of off camera flash techniques being employed by the photographer. Using light modifiers ensures light is natural looking and soft, making it difficult to spot advanced lighting techniques.
