Sony FX5 First Look with FX3 and FX6 Comparison

With the launch of the FX5, Sony has expanded its Cinema Line of professional video cameras with a new compact full-frame model that boasts several firsts for the range. It combines a newly developed 16.6MP stacked full-frame sensor with the latest BIONZ XR2 processor and AI Processing Unit, as well as becoming the first compact Cinema Line camera to offer 5K Open Gate recording, internal 16-bit X-OCN and Three Base ISO. These features bring high-end Cinema workflows to a more portable body that caters to solo creators and small crews.

How much is the Sony FX5?

The Sony FX5 body costs £4,699.00, which places it between the FX3, which is £3,579.00, and the FX6, costing £5,220.00. These three Sony Cinema Cameras are aimed at professionals, and the FX5 brings a number of entirely new features, which we investigate next.

What’s new in the FX5?

The FX5 is the first compact Cinema Line camera from Sony to offer 5K Open Gate video recording, which is relevant for modern productions catering to multiple formats, such as 16:9 for YouTube, vertical for TikTok and 4:3, for example.

It also includes internal 16-bit X-OCN recording, which is a compressed RAW format derived from BURANO, VENICE and other Sony Cinema cameras. These are available with two new C1 and C2 compression formats for smaller files reducing transfer times and storage requirements.

The sensor is a brand new stacked 16.6MP full-frame Exmor RS CMOS sensor, designed for fast readout with reduced rolling shutter effects. This is paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor, bringing Sony’s latest autofocus capabilities with integrated AI-driven subject detection that includes humans, animals, birds and insects to the Cinema Line.

Additionally, the FX5 offers Three Base ISO (800, 4000 and 12800) for lower-noise image quality across a wider range of lighting conditions, which sits alongside dual gain technology. A future firmware update is planned to provide high-speed 5K 120p and 4K 240p recording formats, and it adopts the NP-SA100 battery, increasing capacity by around 30%.

Colour profiles, timecode and a new menu layout derived from CineAlta cameras provide a familiar workflow, cementing the option to use this as a B-cam alongside the FX6 and Sony’s other high-end Cine Cameras for professional production workflows.

This is an entirely new model, which one paper really does offer the best of larger-format cameras for cinematography and portable bodies for solo content creation.

Body design and handling
