Sony FX5 XLR Handle Unit Summary
The Sony FX5 XLR Handle Unit expands the FX5 Compact Cinema Line Camera with professional audio connectivity and improved handheld operation. Connecting digitally through the camera’s Multi Interface Shoe, it adds two balanced XLR/TRS inputs with selectable Mic, Line and +48V phantom power for professional microphones, wireless receivers and external audio sources without requiring additional interface cables.
Supporting up to 96kHz, 32-bit float recording, the Handle Unit captures a wide dynamic range while reducing the need for precise manual gain adjustment. Independent physical controls for each channel provide rapid access to audio settings during recording, making it well suited to documentary, ENG, commercial, corporate and live event productions.
Available separately for FX5 body owners, it delivers the same professional audio capability supplied with the Sony FX5 Compact Cinema Line Camera with XLR Handle kit.
Sony FX5 XLR Handle Unit In More Detail
Professional Audio Integration
The Sony FX5 XLR Handle Unit transforms the FX5 into a fully featured production camera by adding professional audio inputs without increasing the complexity of the recording workflow. Rather than relying on external audio interfaces or field recorders, the Handle Unit connects directly through the camera’s Multi Interface Shoe, providing a clean digital connection while avoiding additional interface cables.
Two XLR/TRS Inputs
The Handle Unit provides two balanced XLR/TRS combination inputs with selectable Mic, Line and +48V phantom power, supporting shotgun, handheld interview and boom microphones, wireless receiver systems and external mixers. Dedicated physical controls allow each channel to be adjusted independently for fast changes while filming without interrupting the camera workflow.
96kHz 32-bit Float Recording
Support for up to 96kHz, 32-bit float recording captures a broad dynamic range while reducing the risk of clipped peaks or lost low-level detail compared with conventional fixed-bit recording. This provides greater flexibility when recording dialogue, live performances and unpredictable sound levels, reducing the need for precise gain adjustment while preserving more usable audio during post-production.
Improved Handheld Operation
As well as expanding the camera’s audio capability, the integrated top handle provides a more secure grip for handheld operation, low-angle shooting and carrying the camera between locations. Multiple mounting points allow microphones, wireless receivers and other accessories to be attached while maintaining a compact, well-balanced rig for documentary, broadcast, commercial and event filmmaking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same Handle supplied with the Sony FX5 with XLR Handle kit?
Yes. This is the same as supplied with the Sony FX5 Compact Cinema Line Camera with XLR Handle and is available separately for users who purchase the camera body on its own.
Is this the same XLR Handle Unit used on previous Sony Cinema Line cameras?
No. This is a newly developed XLR Handle Unit for the Sony FX5. Sony states that the previous XLR-H1 is not compatible because the mounting screw positions differ.
Do I need the XLR Handle Unit to record audio on the FX5?
No. The FX5 records usable audio without the handle fitted. The XLR Handle Unit is required when using balanced XLR microphones, phantom power or up to 96kHz, 32-bit float recording.
What audio inputs does the Sony FX5 XLR Handle Unit provide?
The Handle Unit adds two balanced XLR/TRS combination inputs with selectable Mic, Line and +48V phantom power for professional microphones, wireless receivers and external audio equipment.
How does the XLR Handle Unit connect to the FX5?
The Handle Unit connects digitally through the camera’s Multi Interface Shoe, allowing audio signals and camera communication without requiring additional interface cables.
Can I use wireless microphone receivers with the Handle Unit?
Yes. Professional wireless receiver systems with compatible XLR outputs can be connected directly to either XLR/TRS input, making the Handle Unit suitable for interviews, documentary production and location sound recording.
