Gareth’s initial hands-on time left a strong impression. Increased resolution and cropping flexibility are excellent, while autofocus now feels highly even more dependable across portraits, wildlife and action.
The new 30fps blackout-free burst shooting adds genuine versatility, although fast, high-capacity memory cards are essential. Image stabilisation also feels improved, helping make slower shutter speeds more usable handheld. Gareth was particularly impressed by the EVF quality and smaller operational refinements such as the illuminated controls and tally lamp, while video performance also appears meaningfully improved over the previous generation.

The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II is a professional telephoto zoom built for high-speed stills and hybrid video. XA, Super ED and ED elements maintain sharpness and suppress chromatic aberration across the zoom range, supporting the full resolving power of the Alpha 7R VI. Four XD Linear Motors keep pace with blackout-free 30fps shooting and AI subject tracking, while the approximately 1045g body weight makes it notably easier to use handheld during long events and location work.
A minimum focusing distance of 0.4m at 70mm and 0.3x maximum magnification give the lens close-up capability unusual for a telephoto zoom, useful for details, florals and compressed compositions without switching lenses. Blackout-free continuous shooting is available, with up to 30fps with AF and AE tracking, while autofocus and exposure calculations operate up to 60 times per second in compressed RAW format.
Dynamic Range
The sensor and processor combination extends dynamic range to 16 stops with dual gain, improving tonal separation in difficult lighting. Shadow noise reduction has been refined for smoother gradation, particularly useful for portrait, wedding, fashion and commercial photography.
Auto White Balance features AI-based scene analysis and enhanced light source detection, building on a visible light and IR sensor system, and adding AI-based estimation of challenging light sources.
8.5-stop image stabilisation
The 5-axis in-body stabilisation system delivers up to 8.5 stops of compensation at the centre frame and 7.0 stops at the periphery under CIPA 2024 standards, supporting yet more effective handheld shooting with high-resolution in lower light.
Composite RAW Shooting

Sensor readout speed is reduced and power consumption increases when active, making it best suited to landscapes, interviews and controlled productions rather than fast-action shooting.
Professional audio
32-bit float audio recording is supported via the optional XLR-A4 Digital XLR Audio Adapter connected through the Multi Interface Shoe, with separate 32-bit float WAV files recordable independently from the MP4 output. Note that 32-bit float and 96kHz recording require a compatible body with the XLR adapter attached. Internal microphone processing has been refined to reduce consistent background noise including air conditioning, fan noise and lens power zoom operation.

- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.

- Lenses – May have slight dust inside that does not affect images. The mount shows signs of use.
- Well Used – The equipment will show significant signs of wear. The paintwork will be coming away in large areas exposing the metal work, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body.
- Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens.
