Sony A7R VI Camera with FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens Kit Summary
The Sony A7R VI with FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens Kit combines the new high-resolution stacked full-frame E Mount camera with one of the most technically ambitious Sony lenses released to date. Designed for photographers and filmmakers who prioritise subject separation, low-light performance and fast autofocus, this pairing suits portrait, wedding, fashion, indoor sports and commercial production at a professional level.
The FE 50-150mm f/2 GM is the world’s first telephoto zoom lens with a maximum focal length of 150mm and a constant f/2 aperture, providing a full stop advantage over traditional 70-200mm f/2.8 designs while maintaining a highly practical portrait-to-telephoto zoom range. The lens also received an EISA award for 2025–2026 shortly after launch.
The A7R VI complements the lens with blackout-free shooting at up to 30fps, advanced AI subject recognition and internal 8K 30p recording. XA elements, an 11-blade circular aperture and refined aberration correction produce exceptionally smooth background rendering and strong subject isolation throughout the zoom range.
Despite the constant f/2 aperture, the lens remains relatively manageable at approximately 1340g without the tripod foot attached. Internal zoom construction also maintains stable handling during handheld and gimbal operation throughout long assignments.
Overview and Key Improvements
The Alpha 7R VI introduces a new 66.8MP stacked BSI full-frame sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor, delivering significantly faster readout than previous R-series cameras alongside blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30fps with AF and AE tracking. Video capability expands to internal 8K 30p and oversampled 4K 120p recording, while Dual Gain improves dynamic range and low-light flexibility.
Sony also updates autofocus with improved AI subject recognition, enhanced low-light AF performance and a new Auto detection mode capable of identifying subjects without manual switching. Handling improvements include a redesigned grip, brighter 9.44M-dot EVF, dual USB-C ports, revised menu structure and a higher-capacity battery NP-SA100 with faster charging and improved workflow support for professional hybrid production.
Observational Behaviour
Gareth’s initial hands-on time left a strong impression. Increased resolution and cropping flexibility are excellent, while autofocus now feels highly even more dependable across portraits, wildlife and action.
The new 30fps blackout-free burst shooting adds genuine versatility, although fast, high-capacity memory cards are essential. Image stabilisation also feels improved, helping make slower shutter speeds more usable handheld. Gareth was particularly impressed by the EVF quality and smaller operational refinements such as the illuminated controls and tally lamp, while video performance also appears meaningfully improved over the previous generation.
Sony A7R VI Camera with FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens Kit In More Detail
Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens
The FE 50-150mm f/2 GM is a professional telephoto zoom developed for photographers and filmmakers who want prime-lens image quality with zoom flexibility. XA elements and advanced aberration correction maintain sharpness and contrast across the frame while suppressing colour fringing and onion-ring bokeh, and the 11-blade circular aperture produces smooth background separation particularly valuable for portraiture, weddings, fashion and cinematic work.
Four XD Linear Motors drive the floating focus mechanism for fast, accurate autofocus supporting continuous shooting up to 120fps on compatible Alpha bodies and reliable tracking during 4K 120p recording. Internal zoom construction holds stable weight distribution throughout the range, keeping the approximately 1340g lens practical for handheld use and gimbal operation across long assignments.
66.8MP stacked Exmor RS sensor
The Alpha 7R VI pairs a newly developed 66.8MP stacked BSI Exmor RS full-frame sensor with the BIONZ XR2 processor, delivering substantially faster readout than the Alpha 7R V and reducing rolling shutter distortion across stills and video. Blackout-free continuous shooting is available, with up to 30fps with AF and AE tracking, while autofocus and exposure calculations operate up to 60 times per second in compressed RAW format.
Dynamic Range
The sensor and processor combination extends dynamic range to 16 stops with dual gain, improving tonal separation in difficult lighting. Shadow noise reduction has been refined for smoother gradation, particularly useful for portrait, wedding, fashion and commercial photography.
Auto White Balance features AI-based scene analysis and enhanced light source detection, building on a visible light and IR sensor system, and adding AI-based estimation of challenging light sources.
8.5-stop image stabilisation
The 5-axis in-body stabilisation system delivers up to 8.5 stops of compensation at the centre frame and 7.0 stops at the periphery under CIPA 2024 standards, supporting yet more effective handheld shooting with high-resolution in lower light.
Composite RAW Shooting
Pixel Shift Multi Shooting combines four or 16 frames into files up to approximately 265.8MP when processed in Imaging Edge Desktop. A new composite noise reduction mode merges between four and 32 handheld frames into composite RAW or JPEG files for cleaner low-light results.
Improved RAW compression
A new RAW compression structure reduces file sizes without compromising resolution, improving workflow efficiency during high-volume shooting and delivery. FL2 and FL3 Creative Looks have been added to expand in-camera colour options.

Our Verdict
The Sony A7R VI with FE 50-150mm f/2 GM is one of the most distinctive kits in Sony’s mirrorless system, combining exceptional subject separation and low-light performance with the flexibility of a zoom lens. The constant f/2 aperture changes what this focal range can deliver in practical shooting situations, particularly for portraits, weddings, indoor sports and events where both shallow depth of field and fast shutter speeds are important.
Combined with the Alpha 7R VI’s stacked sensor, blackout-free shooting and advanced AI autofocus system, the result is a highly capable setup for fast-paced professional environments where moments are difficult to repeat. Despite its specification, the lens also remains manageable for handheld use throughout long assignments.
