Fujifilm X-T50 Camera Review

Fujifilm is on a roll, following the debut of the impressive Fujifilm X100VI in February 2024 with the release of a retro-inspired X series mirrorless camera just three months later. The key difference is the ability to switch lenses, with the X-T50 offering similar dial-based style and ergonomics, with the added option to switch between the vast range of X mount lenses at will.

So without further ado let’s find out what Fujifilm has in store for creators with their newest X Series hybrid X-T50 camera.

How much is the Fujifilm X-T50 Camera?

The Fujifilm X-T50 camera body costs £1299.00, which is a very compelling price point for what it offers photo and video creators. There are three colour options, plus lots of optional lens kits to choose between, which we highlight in the table below.

Fuji also updated their most popular kit lens, which is priced at just £699.00 and available in camera body kits, or as a standalone Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR Lens, which we also explore below.

Which X-T50 Camera and lens kits are available?

We’ve created the table below to make it easier to choose between the two camera body colours and X-T50 lens kits, which are all available to order following the 16th May, 2024 launch.

What key features does the Fujifilm X-T50 offer?

The X-T50 is the spiritual successor to the X-T30 II, arriving with lots of upgrades to the exterior and under the hood. Despite being priced as a more entry-level camera it offers powerful features with the latest technology, which are ported across from high-end cameras like the X-T5 and X-H2.

Fujifilm X-T5 and X-T50 cameras compared

The table below compares key specifications between the X-T5, which is Fujifilm’s stills-oriented flagship camera, and the newer X-T50. Without making too many compromises the X-T50 offers you a beautifully styled, and fully-functional hybrid APS-C camera body, with powerful features for content creation.

Is the X-T50 Autofocus good?

Yes, the X-T50 autofocus is excellent, thanks to the combination of X-Processor 5 and Fujifilm’s 40.2MP BSI CMOS HR Sensor. The camera is able to offer wide AF coverage, as well as featuring an advanced AF algorithm aided by enhanced AI-powered subject detection and tracking.

This means that human faces and eyes are covered by the AF system, as well as animals, birds, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes, and trains, whether vlogging, shooting stills or making movies.

20 Film Simulation modes

The X-T50 is the first Fujifilm camera with a dedicated Film Simulation dial, which enables quick access to many of the 20 signature Film Simulation modes. These include the latest REALA-ACE film recipe, which is an everyday profile that adds somewhat reduced saturation and similar tonality as PRO Neg. Std.

Colour profiles digitally replicate Fujifilm’s legendary film styles, enabling unique and distinct colours to be captured in-camera, with plenty of experimentation available to creators, without needing to edit images before sharing. The addition of a dial makes this process more intuitive and easier to switch colour profiles without needing to access any menus.

Is the Fujifilm X-T50 good for video recording?

Fujifilm is targeting beginner and enthusiast-level hybrid content creators with the X-T50 camera, which enables you to record video in a wide range of formats up to a maximum 6.2K/30p to suit different projects. You can capture footage in 4K/60p, and high-speed 1080/240p for slow motion playback, with 4:2:2 10-bit with F-Log2.

There’s even support for 12-bit ProRes and BlackMagic RAW when using an external video recorder, plus camera to cloud frame.io is built-in, which puts this camera at the forefront of creative collaborations.

F-Log 2 provides greater flexibility during post-production with broader adjustments for colour, luminance, saturation, and similar attributes. If you don’t want to process your movies you can shoot in a variety of easy profiles, and use cine film simulation modes, that are just as effective as stills film simulation.

Is the X-T50 easy to use?

The X-T50 is one of the most intuitive X series cameras, thanks to Fujifilm’s familiar and instantly accessible dial-based controls, easy to navigate menus and tactile ergonomics. There are three dials on the top, front and rear control dials plus a clean rear panel with Quick menu, joystick and LCD.

Fujifilm updated the shape of the grip and the layout of the buttons on the rear have been fine-tuned to allow for more comfortable shooting of both still and video. The body itself is also slightly more rounded, which helps keep the camera small yet easy to hold.

The rationale behind this body design isn’t simply to look chic, which it does, but to provide instant access to many of the most widely used camera settings by simply turning the dials, which offers an engaging and immersive experience, rivalling that of the now legendary X-100 series of compact cameras. The key difference is the ability to change lenses and capture a more diverse range of subjects more precisely than possible with the fixed lens in the X100 VI for example.

X Mount lenses

The ability to change lenses on the X-T50 body offers the flexibility to capture a diverse array of subjects more easily than with a fixed focal length lens. Available as a body only for those with existing lenses, in various kits, or with options to expand through a wide range of X-mount lenses.

Capture everything from macro photography with the XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens, to wildlife and birds with a telephoto lens like the XF 150-600mm F/5.6-8 R LM OIS WR, or even imitate the X100 VI with the XF 23mm F2 R WR lens.

Whatever types of shots you love to capture you’ll find the perfect lightweight option from not only Fujifilm, but also third party manufacturers like Laowa, Samyang, Sigma, Tamron, TTArtisan, Viltrox and Voigtlander!

New Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR Lens

Along with all of the existing models, Fuji is releasing an updated kit lens, with the Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR arriving to replace the aging 18-55mm kit lens. Along with X-T50 kits this model is available with the X-T5, X-S20 and as a standalone for purchase.

The XF 16-50mm features an updated optical design, which resolves higher-resolution sensors more adeptly, as well as providing a 9-blade aperture for beautiful bokeh, fast and quiet AF for stills or video, plus a versatile minimum focus distance with high magnification.

What type of storage media does the X-T50 have?

A single UHS-II SD card slot is available. SD memory cards are cost-effective, and readily available in a huge range of sizes and speeds, catering to any budget and data requirements. The fastest UHS-II cards keep pace with 6.2K video and 20fps burst shooting in electronic shutter mode without any problems.

The X-T50 supports up to 2TB SDXC Cards, and a Video Speed Class V90.

Best accessories

If you’re starting photography from a smartphone you may need to buy at least one, or ideally two SD memory cards. You could choose a high-speed UHS-II card such as the Lexar 128GB Professional 1800x 270MB/S UHS-II V60 SDXC Card Gold, along with a more cost-effective SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO 200MB/S UHS-I card* rather than two more expensive options.

*For recording movies, use an SD memory card with UHS Speed Class 3 or higher.

Although there’s a single NP-W126S Li-ion battery included, you’ll benefit from having at least one spare battery in case you run out of power mid shooting, which is very frustrating. The camera also has a 3.5mm stereo mini connector to add an external video microphone. There are 100s available, but you could opt for something compact like the Rode VideoMicro II Compact On-Camera Microphone or the wireless Rode Wireless Go II.

Conclusion

The Fujifilm X-T50 is an affordable APS-C format X Series mirrorless camera, which includes advanced features, while being priced as an entry-level camera. The body is rounded, with a smooth design and improved grip, and includes the first ever Film Simulation dial, which we suspect will appear on future models.

You can capture fast burst images, high-quality video and connectivity includes in-body support for frame.io alongside numerous advanced camera features. Amongst these are quite powerful image stabilisation, an AI-driven autofocus system and comprehensive imaging tools for beginners and more advanced users.

The camera body is available in three colours – with X-T50 in Black, X-T50 Silver and Charcoal X-T50, alongside several lens kits and a new zoom lens.
