When choosing your video mic there are a few features to consider in order to capture the best possible audio quality for your style of shooting. The most popular type is generally a Shotgun which is mounted on top of, or near your camera. This is a directional microphone and records audio directly in front of the camera. These are ideal for filming documentaries, events, or other types of audio when the camera is not in a fixed position and your audio source is constantly changing.

Another option is a ‘Lav’, lavaliere or lapel mic – these are small, clip-on devices that are great for interviews or recording high quality audio when the camera is further away from the subject. Vloggers will use lapel mics to film themselves from a distance. They are also useful when more than one person is being recorded, as they simply clip onto the subjects’ clothing.

Lastly is the ‘boom’ type – these are used for recording audio in larger spaces or when using a Lav or shotgun isn’t practical. These tend to be used by multi-team productions where a dedicated sound engineer can hold the boom in the optimal position.

Other considerations include whether to opt for stereo recording capabilities. This is a consideration when audio needs to be involved and most natural. A recorder kit is often employed with various options, allowing for separate capture and syncing of sound in post processing. This will often yield better results however does require slightly more preparation.

Any of our options can substantially improve the quality of any video and it is widely accepted that decent audio creates audience perception of a good video. If the film quality dips, this is generally more acceptable to viewers than poor sound quality.

Choosing the right mic is simple if you consider the main type of film style which you do most of the time. Many videographers will have more than one option for different situations. Browse our extensive range of audio accessories for wind shields (dead cats), boom stands and a multitude of other useful additions. Video monitors are also often employed when making movies for their high quality, easily viewable advanced capabilities.

At Park Cameras we have a huge range of microphones and sound recorders for professional and high quality audio recording available online and in both our stores where our expert staff can help you find what you're looking for.
