Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8 S Lens Summary

The ultra-wide angle Nikkor Z 20mm f/1.8S prime lens delivers a fast aperture with edge to edge sharpness for Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras. The lens focuses quickly, quietly and smoothly and is fully weather sealed to protect from dust and moisture. This is essential for outdoor photographers as the lens is well suited to landscapes, night photography, architectural, documentary and street. The high performance S-line mirrorless lenses deliver bright f/1.8 apertures and are designed with advanced optics including 3 ED glass and 3 aspherical lens elements. These ensure consistently high quality results, with reduced ghosting, minimal flare and virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations. A total of 14 elements in 11 groups define this extremely competent ultra wide angle lens.

The inclusion of the rounded 9-blade aperture renders out of focus areas with smooth bokeh balls and the Z 20mm f/1.8 S allows a close focus distance of just 20cm. This opens up opportunities to gain extreme angles with exaggerated perspectives on a lens this wide. Photographers who rely on quick autofocus will be pleased at the speed and quietness with which the Nikon Z 20mm achieves focus, employing an accurate internal STM motor system. Wedding and portrait photographers often require quiet discreet shooting and this lens performs admirably on those fronts too.

Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8 S Lens in detail

The Nikon mirrorless Z-mount features an extraa wide opening allowing more light to hit the sensor. The Z 20mm f/1.8 S is able to capitalise on this benefit with its' ultra-wide focal width. Adding such a fast aperture allows landscape photographers to continue shooting as the light fades, or to continue capturing portraits in darker environments. Nikon's in-camera vibration reduction also works to ensure sharp images are captured in any lighting conditions, and the internal autofocus system is consistently quick and accurate, able to acquire and track subjects efficiently.

Nikon's anti-reflective Nano Crystal Coating combats ghosting and flare which can be particularly prominent when shooting stills or video directly into a light source. This lens also lends itself admirably to video capture, thanks to utilising an electromagnetic aperture control. This means adjustiment of the aperture during filming as lighting conditions change, appears extremely smooth and natural.

When mounted on a full frame FX body such as the Nikon Z7 II an impressive 94° viewing angle is captured, which reduces slightly to 70° on DX format. Night, Milky Way and star photographers will particularly appreciate the low distortion wide angle abilities the 20mm presents.

Looking to sell your Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8 S Ultra Wide Angle Prime Lens?

Our Verdict

The Nikkor Z 20mm f/1.8 S prime is the widest optic currently available within Nikon mirrorless Z-mount lens options and provides ample high performance for photographers who need this extended focal width. It compliments other lenses in the range well, including the equally impressive Z 24mm f/1.8 S. The bright optics within Nikkor's S-line together with the combination of special glass elements are capable of reproducing beautiful natural colours with exquisite detail. Users who shoot by hand will also benefit from the bright aperture as with the quick internal autofocus system.

Whilst images made at ultra-wide 20mm may be difficult to compose initially, once mastered they are extremely satisfying, opening up new creative opportunities with the extra focal width. Photographers who specialise in subjects such as stars, landscape, architecture and interiors will know that this lens provides an extremely compelling solution to gaining the widest photos possible, with low distortion and extra fine detail which the Z-mount is capable of. The automatic electromagnetic aperture control renders natural transitions when recording movies, making a very versatile option for professionals or enthusiasts shooting both film and stills.
