Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 II VM ASPH Nokton Vintage SC Lens Black Leica M summary

The updated Mark II 50mm f/1.5 II VM ASPH Nokton Vintage SC Lens in classic black colour for Leica M cameras is a reminder of what Voigtlander is capable of. Nokton refers to the fastest lenses they manufacture and SC to single coating. The fast nature of this model is apparent with the bright f/1.5 aperture. Not only does help the lens to excel in low light, but also combines a 12-bladed aperture. Together these contribute to smooth, dreamy, out of focus backgrounds when the aperture is wide open. This naturally lends itself to portraits and other types of images where an isolated subject is desirable. Where a greater depth of field is warranted (for example with architecture) the lens can be stopped down to f/16.

Features at a glance

  • Classic compact all-metal lens styling available in three finishes (see below)
  • Extremely fine manual focus mechanism with torque damping
  • Designed for rangefinder cameras with an interlocking system
  • Excellent results from aspherical elements
  • Single coated optics favour black and white work

As a standard prime with 50mm focal width the Nokton Vintage lens is suitable as a general purpose option, capable of capturing any number of subjects from street to travel. The compact size and weight allow photographers to bring this lens to enjoy on any trip barely noticing the sub 200g weight. With single coated optics on this model, the lens reproduces black and white images admirably, suiting cameras such as the Leica M10 Monochrom in particular.

Voigtlander Lens Coatings and Design Variations

Voigtlander M system lenses are designed with two different optical coatings, which are referred to as ‘SC’ and ‘MC’. This stands for single coat and multi coating. With the case of the mark II 50mm f/1.5 VM it also happens to be available in three exterior colour styles, black, silver and nickel finish. This gives us six options to choose from depending on which type of images and movies we tend to enjoy making combined with which style of lens barrel suits our camera.

In general terms single coat may be preferable for monochrome or black and white images. Mid tones are the focus for single coated optics, with subtle graduated tones and slightly less contrast which they produce. This gives the photographer a more neutral starting point for post processing, or can be simply enjoyed for the unique style of image they produce.

Conversely multicoated lenses render beautiful rich natural colours, which some users find favours their colour work. Contrast levels are slightly higher providing more hues as we might find on certain film types.
