Tamron 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E Summary
The Tamron 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD for Sony E is a full-frame standard to short telephoto zoom lens for Sony cameras. The range concentrates on core portrait focal lengths while maintaining a constant F2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom.
The E-mount lens sits alongside Tamron’s successful fast zoom line-up. These include the 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD, but it weighs around half as much as the 35-150mm, which makes a noticeable difference that will appeal to a variety of users
Despite covering 35mm through to short telephoto, the 35-100mm lens measures just 119.2mm long and weighs only 565g. That makes it noticeably smaller and lighter than many traditional 24-70mm F2.8 options, while retaining shallow depth of field and consistent exposure control across the whole range. It.
With a minimum focus distance of 0.22m at 35mm and a maximum magnification of 1:3.3, it also handles close portrait details and third life-size macro shots without the need to switch lenses.
Tamron 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E in More Detail
Optical performance across portrait focal lengths
The 35-100mm range concentrates on classic portrait and lifestyle framing. At 35mm, it covers environmental portraits and documentary-style shooting. From 70mm to 100mm, compression increases naturally, producing subject separation that is reinforced by the constant F2.8 aperture and 9-blade diaphragm for creamy bokeh with rounded point light sources.
The optical design uses 15 elements in 13 groups and maintains clarity across the frame while controlling aberrations. At F2.8, background blur is smooth with gradual transitions, particularly in the 85mm to 100mm range where headshots and closer portraits are popular.
Close focusing and magnification
At the wide end, the lens focuses down to 0.22m, producing a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.3. This allows tight framing of details such as hands, food, wedding accessories or small products without introducing extreme perspective distortion. At 100mm, the minimum focus distance extends to 0.65m, maintaining a comfortable working distance for portraits.
Tamron’s VXD autofocus system
The VXD linear motor system operates with quick focus acquisition and stable tracking performance on Sony’s real-time subject detection systems. In continuous AF modes, transitions are smooth and controlled, which supports both stills bursts and video recording. Focus operation remains quiet, making it suitable for on-camera audio capture in close environments.
Handling and Build
At 565g with an 80.6mm maximum diameter, the lens is portable despite offering a constant F2.8 aperture. The unified 67mm filter size matches many of Tamron’s mirrorless lenses, including the 20-40mm F/2.8 and 16-30mm F/2.8 G2, which simplifies filter use across a multi-lens setup.
It also supports Lens Utility software via the Tamron Link adapter, allowing customisation of functions such as focus ring behaviour for video or preset focus positions.
A moisture-resistant design with a fluorine-coated front element adds durability for location shoots.

Our Verdict
The Tamron 35-100mm F/2.8 Di III VXD for Sony E concentrates on commonplace portrait focal lengths while still being very compact with a consistent F2.8 aperture. It pairs naturally with the Tamron 16-30mm F/2.8 G2 or 20-40mm F/2.8 to create a lightweight two-lens kit, and sits below the broader 35-150mm F/2-2.8 for those who prefer a smaller, simpler zoom range.
Autofocus performance integrates well with Sony’s subject detection systems, and the close focusing distance adds yet more flexibility for detail shots. For portrait, wedding, lifestyle and travel photographers who shoot primarily between 35mm and 100mm, it offers a compelling alternative to wider standard zooms.
