Product Summary
Made for demanding outdoor photography, this flagship combines a 20.4MP stacked sensor with fast subject recognition, high-speed RAW shooting and extensive computational tools. The 1,053-point AF system recognises people, birds, dogs, cats, cars, motorcycles, aircraft and trains, while Pro Capture and blackout-free sequential shooting provide additional support for unpredictable action.
Its strengths extend to more than speed aloe. Up to 8.5 stops of stabilisation supports handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds, while Live GND, Live ND, High Res Shot, Focus Stacking and Handheld Live Composite bring techniques that would ordinarily require filters, a tripod or post-processing directly into the body. Focus Stacking can combine up to 15 images in-camera, which is particularly useful for macro photography.
An IP53-rated body provides dust, splash and freeze resistance down to -10°C, complementing the smaller proportions of the Micro Four Thirds system for wildlife, landscape, macro and travel photography. Video extends to 4K and Cinema 4K at 60p, with 10-bit HLG and OM-Log400 available for more involved hybrid workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose this instead of full-frame?
The smaller sensor supports a more compact system, particularly when using longer lenses, while the stacked design enables extremely fast shooting. This combination makes the format particularly attractive for outdoor subjects where portability and reach are priorities.
Is 20MP enough for large prints and cropping?
For many uses, yes. When additional detail is required, High Res Shot combines multiple exposures to produce 50MP handheld or 80MP tripod-based files. These modes are best suited to relatively static subjects, so they complement rather than replace the standard 20.4MP capture.
What is Live GND?
Live GND simulates a graduated neutral density filter, allowing the position and strength of the transition to be adjusted while viewing the effect. It can help balance a bright sky against a darker foreground without requiring a physical graduated filter.
Is it worth upgrading from the original?
The main improvements include a larger buffer, refined autofocus, Human AI subject detection, Live GND and slightly stronger image stabilisation. Owners who regularly photograph wildlife, action or landscapes are likely to benefit most, while those already satisfied with the original may find the differences less essential.

Our Verdict
What distinguishes this flagship isn’t just speed, but how many difficult situations it can simplify. Stabilisation reduces tripod dependence, Pro Capture provides another option, and computational modes tackle extended depth of field and graduated filters inside the body.
Those are particularly compelling for wildlife, macro and landscape photographers who spend long periods outdoors. Especially where carrying less equipment can be as valuable as performance. The smaller format also brings advantages when putting together a lightweight system around longer focal length lenses.
This is a compelling choice if you value mobility, weather resistance, computational photography and fast subject capture.
Whether you’re new to the OM System or considering upgrading your camera, the OM-1 Mark II presents an enticing proposition. It provides blazing fast speeds, unparalleled computational capabilities and tactile usability, which will help you elevate your filmmaking and photography content.
