Hasselblad XCD 55V f/2.5 Lens Summary

Hasselblad simultaneously released three new XCD lenses compatible with the new flagship X2D 100C camera, which include this standard Hasselblad XCD 55V f/2.5 Lens. The high quality compact prime weighs just 372g, yet includes an optical design which is capable of rendering over 100MP and comes with a series of new features and upgraded optical technology. With an equivalent full-frame 43mm focal length, the XCD 2,5/55V offers a natural field of view, similar to that of the naked eye, which is well suited to a broad variety of subjects, both indoors and out.

The XCD 55V lens can reach a speed up to 1/2000s and delivers flash synchronisation at all speeds up to the maximum 1/2000sec.

The fast and quiet leaf shutter is complemented by a newly designed focusing module, which is also fast and quiet, designed to work seamlessly with the X2D 100C phase-detection AF system.

Key Features

  • Wide maximum aperture standard lens with 43mm equivalent focal width (full-frame format)
  • Minimum object distance of 0,45 m to the image plane
  • Optical design which resolves over 100 megapixels
  • Customisable control ring and aperture ring with stepped and stepless value adjustment
  • H Logo etched rings for good grip and branding
  • New shutter unit and linear stepper AF motor which is quicker and quieter
  • Push – Pull for quick changes between AF To MF with distance scale as well as DOF scale
  • Compatible cameras X2D 100C, X1D 50C, X1DII 50C, 907X (including 907X anniversary kit)

The XCD 2,5/55V lens has a focus ring and a customisable lens control ring, with workflows further enhanced by quick changes between AF and MF achieved by a push and pull of the focus ring. In MF mode you can easily check the focus distance and DOF readings.

High resolution XCD lenses

An updated optical design includes 9 lens elements arranged in 8 groups, with three aspherical elements. The entrance pupil position is 47mm in front of image plane, which is the correct position of the axis of rotation when making a panorama image by combining individual images of a scene. When images are imported to Phocus, distortion is automatically removed.

Three lenses were released simultaneously, including this model, together with the wide angle Hasselblad XCD 38V f/2.5 Lens and short telephoto Hasselblad XCD 90V f/2.5 Lens. Together they provide ultra-high resolution and new features designed for professional photographers working in the studio and on-location in the field.

Precision Hasselblad optics for outstanding images

The Hasselblad lens is able to capture the most subtle nuances of light and shadow, with excellent resolution and colour reproduction. A medium format camera sensor has a large area with high pixel density, posing stringent requirements for the precision of the lens. Starting with the selection of high-quality glass, Hasselblad engineers carefully grind each lens to perfect its optical quality and meet the resolution requirements of 100 million pixels.

The XCD 2,5/55V lens features nine elements arranged in eight groups, which includes two aspherical elements, one ED element, and one specially made large-diameter aspherical element.

Through this design, the lens is both compact in size and also improves light transmittance and suppresses chromatic dispersion, for stunning results.

New Fast, light and accurate focusing module

The upgraded focusing module in the Hasselblad XCD 55V f/2.5 Lens includes a linear stepping motor and a lighter, smaller focusing lens group. These effectively eliminate any backlash from the lens group moving and, coupled with the PDAF technology of the X2D 100C, mean the focusing lens group can quickly reach the focusing position and achieve a precise stop. The result for photographers is fast, flexible and accurate focusing.

Powerful smaller leaf shutter

The leaf shutter is a powerful component in Hasselblad's medium format system and the XCD 2,5/55V lens is equipped with an upgraded leaf shutter which, despite being smaller, maintains the same precision performance as its predecessors. In addition, this ultra-compact shutter delivers flash synchronisation at all speeds up to 1/2000s.

Familiar, yet new aesthetic

The XCD 2,5/55V lens is a precision-crafted metal lens with a focus ring and a newly added control ring, both of which are delicately engraved with a Hasselblad "H" logo. The design is created using a precise 0.3mm drill bit and is a nod to the memorable look of the HC/HCD lenses. Whether paired with X-system or 907X cameras, this new lens is both a homage to the past while standing on its own as a unique, elegant statement.

Intuitive control

The lens is comfortable to use and intuitive in the hand, fully supporting rather than distracting from your creative process and the focus and control rings are fine-tuned for a smooth and satisfying experience. A simple push and pull of the focus ring changes from AF to MF mode, where intuitive scale marks keep focus distance and DOF clear at a glance. The control ring can be customised for quick access to preferred features, resulting in a more convenient and efficient shooting experience.

Our Verdict

Hasselblad’s medium format X system is designed for advanced enthusiast and professional photographers to realise extremely high quality results from an eminently portable system. It is joined by a new flagship 100 megapixel camera, which demands higher resolving lenses with faster AF capabilities for an upgraded phase-detection AF system. To meet these demands a trio of lenses has been developed, which includes this standard focal width Hasselblad XCD 55V f/2.5 Lens.

This beautiful prime offers a combination of portability, wide maximum aperture and extremely high resolution image results, which is achieved by a new optical formula that includes three aspherical elements. The lens also includes an updated AF motor along with an upgraded leaf shutter unit. These are both quicker and quieter than previous generations and provide a flash sync speed up to the maximum shutter speed of 1/2000sec.

Hasselblad also included a customisable control ring and time-saving push–pull mechanism to switch seamlessly between AF and MF. Depth of field and distance are quickly visible through scales. The lens offers excellent ergonomics and Hasselblad’s design flair thanks to ‘H’ logos etched into the rings. Whether you shoot indoors or out this standard prime lens delivers stunning optical quality, high resolution and plenty of features to enhance your workflow.
