Arriving in a focal range never seen before, the Canon RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM Lens is an all-new ultra wide angle zoom lens for Canon mirrorless cameras. Despite its compact size and low weight of just 445g, the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 is packed with technology for content creators who capture everything from landscape photography and astrophotography to travel, vlogging, and video content.

Canon’s optical design includes asphericand UD lens elements, ensuring consistently high image quality. The lens also features a fast f/2.8 aperture, which is ideal for handheld shooting and low light situations. This is further supported by up to 5.5 stops of image stabilisation, which increases to an impressive 8-stops when paired with a compatible EOS R camera body.

Well-known STM technology delivers quiet, smooth autofocus transitions for both stills and video, and the lens features a convenient retractable design, allowing it to be stored easily when not in use.

canon-rf-16-28mm-lifestyle-01

The unique zoom range of the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 perfectly complements the previously released RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM lens, which provides creators with a versatile, lightweight pair of zooms that cover ultra-wide to short telephoto ranges, all while remaining highly portable and more affordable than the classic holy trinity lenses.

Topping off its list of benefits, this RF lens provides weather sealing for outdoor content creation, a signature customisable control ring, and a commonplace 67mm thread for lens filters, ensuring ease of use and versatility for any photographer.

From immersive landscapes to dynamic architectural shots, the 16-28mm focal length allows photographers and videographers to explore compositions that add depth and drama to their work. Versatile for a range of ultra wide subjects

The 16-28mm focal range is exceptionally versatile, making this lens suitable for a variety of ultra-wide-angle subjects. Its capabilities extend to:

  • Interiors: Perfect for capturing expansive room views and architectural details.
  • Landscapes: Ideal for wide, sweeping vistas.
  • Vlogging: Keeps subjects framed with plenty of background context.
  • Wide Views: Great for dramatic sky shots and expansive scenes.
  • Cityscapes: Perfect for urban exploration and skyline photography.
  • Travel: A compact, go-to lens for capturing diverse travel moments.
  • Video Content: Ensures cinematic results with stable and sharp imagery.

Fast wide and Stable

The RF 16-28mm f/2.8 combines a fast aperture and advanced optics for great image quality. Its constant f/2.8 aperture also provides the opportunity for consistent exposure throughout the zoom range, making it ideal for low-light conditions and creative depth-of-field shots – albeit ultra wide lenses are not associated with bokeh due to a deep depth of field. The lens design incorporates two aspheric and four ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements to minimise chromatic aberrations and deliver sharp, high-contrast images with minimal distortion.

The 9-blade aperture creates smooth, circular bokeh shapes, enhancing the aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas. For stabilisation, the lens includes Canon’s Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), which pairs with in-body stabilisation on EOS R cameras, providing up to 8 stops of compensation. This is invaluable for handheld shooting and capturing steadier movies. The lens also includes Canon’s customisable control ring, allowing users to adjust settings such as aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation for faster, more intuitive shooting.

Lens design and construction

The RF 16-28mm f/2.8 is very lightweight and compact, making it a perfect for creators who need to be as agile as possible. Its retractable design reduces storage size, ensuring portability without losing out on durability. The lens features a dedicated AF/MF switch and stabilisation toggle for quick operational changes, which can help with workflow efficiency. Its dust and moisture resistant construction also ensures greater reliability in challenging environments, giving creators additional confidence to shoot in poor conditions.

STM technology

Canon’s Stepping Motor (STM) Leadscrew technology has been the foundation of RF mount lenses, delivering smooth and quiet autofocus performance. This makes the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 particularly suitable for hybrid and video creators, as it enables seamless focus transitions for cinematic-quality footage. The STM motor ensures minimal noise during operation, which is ideal for capturing clean audio alongside video footage, while maintaining fast and accurate focus for stills.

canon-rf-16-28mm-sample-03

Compact and lightweight

Weighing just 445g, the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 is one of Canon’s most portable ultra-wide zoom lenses ever. Its compact dimensions and retractable design make it easy to carry, which is perfect for travel and on-location shoots. The reduced weight ensures comfort during extended use, allowing creators to focus on their craft without fatigue associated with heavier lenses. This is especially true when shooting from a gimbal stabiliser where light weight is especially appreciated.

Pair with the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM

When paired with the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM, this lens creates an incredibly versatile setup covering focal lengths from 16mm to 70mm. Together, these models provide a comprehensive range for capturing everything from expansive wide-angle shots to standard telephoto images. Both share a lightweight design and constant f/2.8 aperture, ensuring consistent performance and portability for hybrid shooters. This pairing is ideal for creators seeking an affordable and lightweight alternative to Canon’s heavier L-series lenses.

Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM Lens Summary

Canon has set another world firstfor mirrorless EOS R camera users with the super telephoto Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM Lens. With a maximum 800mm focal width it offers the world’s longest zoom range for sports and wildlife photographers who capture distant subjects, while remaining extremely portable and lightweight at just 2050g. To cover subjects at even greater distances you can even mount the RF Extender 1.4x or 2x RF Extender, for up to 1600mm of versatile zoom reach.

Built-in image stabilisation (IS) reduces camera shake by 5.5-stops, which increases to an impressive 7.5-stops when combined with body stabilisation, which is found in cameras throughout the EOS R range. IS at this level ensures photographers are able to shoot in low light scenarios while handholding the lens, and still come away with sharp results.

A Nano USM motor delivers smooth and quiet AF, and you can expect consistently high image quality thanks to the optical design, which includes UD lens elements to reduce chromatic aberration.

Photographers who opt to customise their Canon mirrorless lenses benefit from a combined focus and control ring that can be programmed to change various settings such as shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation and ISO.

The RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM super telephoto lens is also designed to be weather resistant for reliable performance in poor conditions outdoors. Furthermore, Canon’s tried-and-tested Super Spectra Coating helps to reduce flare and ghosting when shooting backlit images, or scenes with lots of incidental light.

Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM Lens in More Detail

Super telephoto for wildlife and sports

With a 200-800mm zoom range the RF 200-800mm is the most versatile super telephoto lens for wildlife, sports and other distant subjects. The minimum focus distance of 0.8m further expands its versatility, while compatibility with optional lens teleconverters (extenders) means that you can zoom in even closer to the action, no matter how distant.

A compact design and weight of around 2kg allows you to work handheld for longer periods without a tripod or monopod, although additional support can be of benefit in situations where your position remains static.

Fast and quiet AF

Canon has employed their Nano USM motor technology, which combines the speed of ring-type USM with quiet and smooth STM focusing. This system delivers precise smooth focusing with fine control over speed, as well as near-silent operation, as seen in models such as the RF 100-500mm, RF 24-70mm F/2.8L and similar USM lenses. Whether the subject is stationary or fast moving this super telephoto lens keeps up with high speed and precision.

Up to 7.5-stops image stabilisation

Despite its compact and lightweight design, the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 Lens includes built-in image stabilisation, which reduces camera shake by 5.5-stops.

Canon’s combined lens and body stabilisation is also extremely effective, increasing shake reduction up to 7.5-stops when combined with a camera such as the EOS R3, EOS R5 and R6 Mark II to name a few.

This enables you to work in lower light at slower shutter speeds, while maintaining image quality by keeping ISO as low as possible. The outcome is a greater number of sharp images during challenging situations, whether capturing birds in flight or wind surfers at sunset.

Advanced optics for high image quality

In order to render high image quality Canon has developed an optical design for the 200-800mm RF, which includes UD lens elements. Ultra-low-dispersion (UD) lenses, utilise optical glass with a low refractive index and low dispersion, resulting in reduced chromatic aberration and high image quality.

Furthermore, a multi-layered Super Spectra Coating eliminates ghosting and flare caused by lens surface reflections, while maintaining optimum colour balance. This enables you to capture backlit subjects with higher contrast and reduced flare in the results.

Customisation and control

In line with many Canon mirrorless lenses, the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM combines a focus ring with control ring. The ability to manual focus is ideal in particular situations, while the control ring can be customised to adjust camera settings and enhance your workflow.

Weather resistant design

For reliable use during inclement conditions the RF 200-800mm lens is sealed in several locations. When combined with a weather sealed camera body you can shoot in light rain and dusty environments with less worrying about inclement conditions.
