NEWS: Sony Updates the FX3 Camera
For May 2025, the popular full-frame Sony FX3 Cinema Line camera has received a minor update, which includes a higher resolution LCD screen and a dual charger is now included in the box. Aside from this there are some deleted features, which are largely defunct, such as the removal of the infrared remote function and NFC.
Sony’s versatile pro video camera keeps its 12.1MP back-illuminated full-frame sensor to enable 4K video recording at up to 120fps with minimal rolling shutter and exceptional low-light performance. The internal fan is another popular harder feature, that allows for continuous 4K/60p recording on a relatively compact camera body, which suits independent filmmakers, solo content creators and small production crews.
What’s New in the 2025 FX3?
The FX3 (ILME-FX3A) now includes a 3-inch 1024x768 LCD monitor, which was originally designed for the FX30. The FX3 maintains its position in the lineup, with high image quality from 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording as well as profiles such as S-Log3 and S-Cinetone. Users can also record RAW over HDMI for premium editing capabilities from the 15+ stops of DR.
Sony now ships the BC-ZD1 dual battery charger with the camera instead of the previous single-slot version, with an improved workflow for creators who use multiple batteries. This camera from Sony no longer ships with a USB-C cable or power cord.
Since its release the FX3 has become very popular among documentary makers, solo filmmakers, YouTubers and has been adopted for events, weddings and filmmaking projects. The body is ideally sized for solo filmmaking, with 5.5 stops of built-in body stabilisation, XLR audio via the top handle, and pro-level features in a video-first design.
Autofocus performance is still a highlight of Sony cameras with Real-time Eye AF, subject tracking, and customisable AF transitions all catered for in the FX3. The Fast Hybrid AF system with 627 focus points for video ensures excellent AF, even in low light or when capturing moving subjects.
The camera supports dual card recording to CFexpress Type A or SD UHS-II, and includes timecode sync, LUT import, and benefits from firmware updates that have added features like Cine EI Quick and enhanced proxy workflows, which bring the FX3 closer to the higher-end Sony FX6 in terms of versatility for solo filmmakers.
For those comparing Cinema models, we previously published a detailed Sony FX3 vs a7S III vs FX6 comparison, along with a Sony FX30 Vs FX3 Vs FX6 Camera Comparison, which are relevant for creators deciding between some of Sony’s best full-frame video options.
The 2025 update doesn’t change the camera’s fundamentals, but it adds polish to a system, which has repeatedly proven itself in the field. With a higher res. screen, dual battery charger, and streamlined features, it’s better suited than ever for modern video creators who want access to a cinematic full-frame experience while still enjoying the benefits of such a portable body.
Available now from £3,599.00, the 2025 Sony FX3 (ILME-FX3A) is without a doubt one of the best tools for solo video productions, and continues to offer excellent value for E-mount creators.
