Firmware updates coming June 2021 for Lumix G cameras

Exciting times for micro four thirds

Following on from a series of exciting announcements for the micro four thirds system, with the release of the new Lumix GH5M2 and the development of the Lumix GH6 (coming late 2021), Panasonic is committed to enhancing its current G Series MFT line up. Out of interest we reviewed the new GH5 M2 here in our blog.

Lumix GH5S Firmware Version 2.0

First up the brilliant GH5S which gets RAW video data output over HDMI. Firmware 2.0 enables the GH5S to capture Apple Pro Res RAW video over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V external monitor/recorder.

  • Apple ProRes RAW can be recorded on an Atomos Ninja V.
  • 4K / Anamorphic (4:3) 3.7K, 12-bit RAW video output via HDMI.

A LUT (Look up table) exclusively designed for RAW video recorded on Ninja V is available on the Panasonic customer support website to enable the same colour grading as V-Log/V-Gamut. It is easy to match colours between the footage recorded with Panasonic Varicam and EVA1 cameras to combine them.

Other features upgraded in Version 2.0 include Improved AF performance. The GH5S will inherit improved autofocus technology and performance of the full frame LUMIX S5. Eye and face AF is 2x faster and humans and animals have a 5x faster recognition cycle speed. On top of this tracking and recognition AF performance has been improved with the addition of head recognition. Human/animal recognition can be set ON or OFF when the AF mode is set to [1-Area].

  • Further added features for the GH5S include:
  • [Red REC Frame Indicator] function has been added.
  • It is possible to record and play back vertical videos vertically, the camera automatically detects the vertical orientation of the video.
  • Users can choose to add camera orientation information in [Vertical Position Info (Video)] menu to prevent unintended image rotation in playback.
  • [Video Guide Line] function has been upgraded with more options.
  • [Power Save Mode] can be selectable while the camera is powered with an AC adaptor (DMW-AC10, sold separately).

Lumix G9 Firmware Version 2.4

The star of the day for the G9 is improved AF performance, which is also ported from the Lumix S5 camera and matches the update above.

  • Eyes and face are detected at a 2x faster recognition cycle speed and humans and animals at a 5x faster recognition cycle speed*.
  • Tracking and recognition performance of AF have been improved with an addition of head recognition.
  • Human/animal recognition can be set ON or OFF when the AF mode is set to [1-Area].

Further added functions for the G9

  • [Red REC Frame Indicator] function has been added.
  • It is possible to record and play back vertical videos vertically, the camera automatically detects the vertical orientation of the video.
  • Users can choose to add camera orientation information in [Vertical Position Info (Video)] menu to prevent unintended image rotation in playback.
  • [Frame Marker] function has been added.
  • [Power Save Mode] can be selectable while the camera is powered with an AC adaptor (DMW-AC10, sold separately).
  • The camera is recognised when it is connected to a PC via the USB power supply port.

Lumix G100 Firmware Version 1.2

A more minor but useful update comes to the G100 with:

  • Users can choose to add camera orientation information in [Vertical Position Info (Video)] menu to prevent unintended image rotation in playback.
  • The camera is recognised when it is connected to a PC via the USB power supply port.

New GH5 M2 Firmware Updates

The Lumix GH5M2 will continue to evolve with a future firmware update scheduled by the end of 2021. The new firmware will include:

  • RTP/RTSP wired IP streaming
  • Live View Composite
  • USB Tethering (linked to a smartphone via 4G/5G), Compatible Streaming Distribution
  • Even more stable smartphone connection

Firmware update for Lumix G / LEICA DG lenses

An upcoming firmware for Lumix G / Leica DG lenses will make their use with the GH5 M2 more convenient, with a choice of linear or non-linear focus ring. In the non-linear setting, the focus shifts variably according to the rotation speed of the focus ring. In the linear setting, the focus shifts at fixed intervals according to how far the lens is turned, mimicking a manual lens. The sensitivity in the linear setting can be set between 90 and 360 degrees at 30-degree intervals.

Panasonic is renowned for updating firmware for their cameras to keep pushing their capabilities and keep them current as technology improves.
