Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 Heliar Classic VM Lens for Leica M Summary

The new Voigtländer Heliar Classic 50mm f/1.5 VM is the latest addition to their extensive Leica M Mount lens line-up. Designed to accommodate a wide range of subjects, this standard lens is specifically for full-frame VM mount cameras.

This 50mm f/1.5 Heliar Classic lens has been designed to create a classically styled image at wide open apertures by intentionally not correcting for certain optical aberrations. This image effect is painterly and subtle compared to images created with modern lenses. The look is often strived for by photographers when creating cinematic or nostalgic styled images with a less clinical feel.

By leaving both coma and spherical aberrations uncorrected, Voigtländer has created a genuine classic image rendering rather than images created with digital post-processing. Not every subject demands maximum sharpness and saturation, some require and deserve a more delicate touch. This unique Heliar look cannot be obtained with modern lenses that over correct all optical aberrations.

Key Features

  • Heliar-type optical design with a large f/1.5 aperture
  • Classic image style characterised by residual aberrations
  • Metal lens barrel design with high rigidity and durability
  • Manual focus-only for accurate focusing operation
  • High-precision rangefinder interlocking mechanism
  • Minimum focusing distance of 0.5m
  • Bayonet VM Mount with full-frame image circle for Leica M-Mount cameras

Looking to sell your Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 Heliar Classic VM Lens for Leica M?

Our Verdict

Whether you shoot portraits, street photography or simply want a general purpose prime lens for your Rangefinder, the Voigtländer 50mm f/1.5 Heliar Classic VM could be the perfect choice. The idea behind the Heliar Classic is to help artists create a natural image with uncorrected aberrations, resulting in photographs which are hard to come by in a digital age. That’s not to say you can’t achieve a high level of sharpness which you can as the lens is manual focus-only as all Voigtländer options are, so you can get pin sharp results. It’s more about saturation, coma and spherical aberrations which have been left in to create a unique look and feel.

The lens suits the high quality nature of Leica M cameras with its all-metal barrel design and includes a high-precision rangefinder interlocking mechanism. The bright aperture helps with depth of field and to create smooth out of focus background blur, adding to the overall effect. If you love an engaging experience with artistic, almost painterly results look no further than this 50mm f/1.5 Heliar Classic VM.
