Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS Lens
The FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS Lens is an excellent match for the A7 III, combining genuine super telephoto reach with a compact 654g design that’s comfortable to carry on day trips and holidays.
Dual linear motors work seamlessly with the camera’s Hybrid AF system to maintain reliable autofocus, while Optical SteadyShot and the A7 III’s 5-axis in-body image stabilisation help produce sharper handheld images at longer focal lengths. A close focusing distance of 1.13m (Wide) / 0.86m (Tele) with 0.41× maximum magnification broadens creative possibilities, while compatibility with Sony E-Mount teleconverters allows the system to grow as your photography develops.
Sony A7 III Camera Body
24.2MP Full-Frame Sensor
The A7 III's back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor captures 24.2 megapixels, paired with a front-end LSI that doubles sensor readout speed compared with the A7 II. A native ISO range of 100 to 51,200, expandable to 204,800 for stills, is supported by approximately 15 stops of dynamic range at low sensitivity, giving reasonable flexibility when working with shadows and highlights. 14-bit RAW output is retained even during silent and continuous shooting.
Autofocus
A 693-point phase-detection AF system, covering approximately 93 percent of the frame, works alongside 425 contrast-detection points and focuses reliably down to EV -3. Eye AF operates in AF-C mode for both stills and continuous tracking, including subjects that turn away from the camera. Focus points can be moved quickly using a dedicated multi-selector joystick, and an AF-ON button separates focus activation from the shutter button.
10fps Continuous Shooting
Full-resolution burst shooting reaches 10fps with continuous AF/AE tracking, for up to 177 JPEG, 89 compressed RAW or 40 uncompressed RAW images per burst. A fully silent electronic shutter option suits situations where noise would disturb a subject, such as wildlife photography.
4K Video
4K video uses full pixel readout without pixel binning, processing around 2.4 times more data than standard 4K capture for reduced moire. S-Log2, S-Log3 and HLG picture profiles support colour grading and HDR playback on compatible displays, and Full HD slow motion is available at up to 120fps.
5-Axis In-Body Stabilisation
Sensor-based stabilisation compensates for five types of camera shake and provides up to 5 stops of shutter speed advantage, working with both E-mount and adapted A-mount lenses.
Build and Handling
A magnesium alloy top cover, front cover and internal frame provide durability, with dust and moisture sealing around buttons and dials. The 2.36-million-dot XGA OLED viewfinder and 3-inch tilting touchscreen support touch focus and touch tracking. Dual SD card slots, one with UHS-II support, allow simultaneous or relay recording between RAW and JPEG or stills and video. The NP-FZ100 battery supports approximately 710 shots per charge, and a USB Type-C port allows tethered shooting and charging from external power.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose the Sony A7 III with the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS Lens Kit?
This kit offers one of the most affordable ways to enjoy full-frame image quality with a lightweight Sony 100-400mm telephoto zoom. Combining dependable autofocus, effective image stabilisation and excellent portability, it’s ideal for photographers who want genuine super telephoto reach while keeping costs lower than the A7 IV kit.
Should I choose the A7 III or A7 IV with this lens?
Both kits include the same FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS Lens, but the A7 III focuses on excellent value while still delivering outstanding image quality and fast autofocus. The A7 IV adds a higher-resolution 33MP sensor, improved Real-time Tracking autofocus, enhanced video capabilities and a fully articulating touchscreen, making it the better choice for photographers who regularly crop images or need Sony’s latest features.
Does the A7 III’s image stabilisation work with the lens?
Yes. The A7 III’s 5-axis in-body image stabilisation works together with the lens’s Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation to help reduce camera shake when photographing handheld at longer focal lengths.
Can I use teleconverters with this kit?
Yes. The FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS Lens is compatible with Sony’s SEL14TC 1.4x and SEL20TC 2x teleconverters, extending the maximum focal length to 560mm or 800mm while remaining fully compatible with the A7 III.
Is this a good first full-frame telephoto kit?
Yes. Combining the proven A7 III with Sony’s lightweight 100-400mm telephoto zoom creates an accessible route into full-frame telephoto photography. It’s an excellent upgrade for photographers moving beyond a standard zoom or older DSLR system.
What accessories should I add to this kit?
A fast UHS-II SD memory card is recommended to support continuous shooting and 4K video recording. Many photographers also choose a 67mm protective filter, a comfortable camera strap and, for longer telephoto sessions, a monopod or tripod.
