Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary Lens for Sony E Summary
The Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary Lens for Sony E is an ultra-wide prime for APS-C format Alpha mirrorless cameras. It offers a 12mm focal length, which is the widest view you can get from an f/1.4 lens in this format, giving a full-frame equivalent of 18mm. That makes it a great choice for scenes where you want to fit as much in as possible, whether shooting landscapes, city, or video content.
The bright f/1.4 aperture comes into its own in low light. It lets you keep shutter speeds faster when photographing night skies, interiors, or street scenes at night, and it can produce a degree of subject separation for an ultra-wide of this focal length. This gives you a bit more creative control over depth of field than you might expect from an ultra-wide lens of this kind.
This Sony E lens has an optical design that features 14 elements in 12 groups, including two SLD and three aspherical elements. These work together to keep the image sharp across the frame and to reduce aberrations, while coatings maintain contrast and colour when shooting into strong light. Sagittal coma flare is well controlled too, which is a bonus for astrophotography.
Weighing in at just 225g and measuring under 7cm, it balances well on smaller Sony E APS-C bodies like the A6700, and is easy to carry for travel or outdoor shoots. It’s also gimbal-friendly, with fast, quiet autofocus driven by a stepping motor and minimal focus breathing for video creators. Weather sealing, a water and oil-repellent front element, and an aperture ring for exposure control round off a lens from Sigma that’s well suited to stills photography, video, and creative content.

Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary Lens for Sony E in More Detail
Widest angle of view in its class
The Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary is the first APS-C lens to combine a 12mm focal length with an f/1.4 aperture. On APS-C cameras this gives a full-frame equivalent of around 18mm, which allows you to capture an entire scene, whether it’s a landscape, a city, or a group photo of fiends and family.
The bright f/1.4 aperture not only helps in low-light situations such as night street photography or if shooting in an interior, but also works for group selfies, vlogging, and creative wide-angle stills and video shots.
High optical performance from f/1.4
The optical design uses 14 elements in 12 groups, with three double-sided aspherical lenses and two SLD glass elements, which are positioned to deliver high resolution right from f/1.4. Aberrations are well controlled, and sagittal coma flare is minimised, so point light sources like stars remain sharp and well defined across the frame, which is especially ideal for astrophotography. Coatings have also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting, helping to maintain contrast and rich colour in challenging lighting.
Compact and lightweight design
By optimising the arrangement of double-sided aspherical elements, Sigma has kept the size and weight impressively low for an ultra-wide f/1.4. The lens measures just 69.4mm long and weighs around 225g, so it’s highly portable and easy to keep in your kit for travel or outdoor shooting. It also works well on shooting grips and gimbals, giving photographers and filmmakers even more flexibility in how they can use the lens.
Smooth, precise autofocus for stills and video
Focusing is handled by a stepping motor that moves a lightweight focus group with speed and accuracy. It offers reliable tracking for moving subjects and operates quietly for video. Focus breathing is well controlled too, which keeps the angle of view consistent during focus pulls, resulting in a more natural look.
Aperture ring for direct control
The lens includes an aperture ring for intuitive control over exposure, which allows you to adjust settings quickly without relying on the camera dials.
Weather-resistant build for outdoor use
A dust and splash-resistant structure protects the lens when shooting outdoors, and the front element has a water and oil-repellent coating that make it easier to clean. This gives you greater confidence for shooting in light rain, at the coast, or in dusty locations.
One of Sigma’s APS-C f/1.4 prime lineup
The 12mm joins Sigma’s other APS-C f/1.4 Contemporary primes with the 16mm F/1.4 DC DN for Sony, 23mm, 30mm, and 56mm, which all follow the same concept of combining excellent resolution with a compact, lightweight build. This consistency means you can collect the whole set of fast primes for your APS-C mirrorless camera, with the 12mm now offering the widest option in this, or any other series.

Our Verdict
The Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary Lens for Sony E is a unique ultra-wide angle prime lens that combines portability, speed, and high optical performance. With its 18mm equivalent field of view, it’s well suited to subjects like landscapes, travel, architecture, interiors, as well as street photography, vlogging and general video content. The fast f/1.4 aperture makes it a superb choice for astrophotography too, while also allowing for faster shutter speeds in low light while providing a touch of subject separation.
The optical design delivers sharp, detailed images across the frame, with Sigma’s proprietary coatings applied to keep contrast and colour accurate even in back-lighting situations. Sagittal coma flare control is a real advantage for shooting stars and night skies, and you’ll notice that autofocus is quick, quiet, and accurate, with minimal focus breathing for video shooting.
Despite being an ultra wide lens, it’s compact and lightweight enough to bring anywhere, and is able to withstand inclement weather conditions thanks to weather sealing and a protective front lens coating.
The aperture ring provides tactile control over exposure, making it prefect to use for video or where light changes quickly outdoors. For Sony E APS-C photographers and video creators who want the widest f/1.4 option available, this lens provides a unique perspective with high performance, and all from a very portable package.
