Product Overview
The Silver PEN and a 34mm equivalent prime feel like a particularly natural pairing. Classic camera styling meets a fixed perspective long associated with street and documentary photography, giving you a compact setup that encourages you to notice what’s happening around you rather than stand back and zoom into it.
The included 17mm F1.8 II is wide enough to give people and moments a sense of place, while its bright aperture provides more freedom as available light falls and greater control over background separation. Weighing just 112g, it also keeps the combination light and beautifully balanced for days spent exploring with a camera.
Underneath the timeless exterior is everything that makes this generation of PEN distinctly modern. Create your own Colour and Monochrome Profiles, experiment with computational photography, or let phase-detection autofocus with AI recognition and 5-axis stabilisation handle much of the technical work. A built-in electronic viewfinder provides a more focused way to compose, with 4K and vertical video ready when stills aren’t enough.
In More Detail
Made for observing, not just composing
A fixed 34mm equivalent view has a knack for making photographs feel connected to where they were taken. There’s room for architecture, interiors and surroundings without losing the person, gesture or detail that first caught your attention, which lends itself naturally to an observational style of photography.
Rather than changing focal length, you decide what belongs in the frame by moving closer, stepping back or finding another angle. The F1.8 aperture extends that approach into lower light and provides more scope to separate a subject from its surroundings, while 0.25m close focusing means smaller details can become part of the story too.
Monochrome and Colour Profiles put personal expression at the heart of the shooting experience. Four customisable profiles are available for each, with controls for colour, tone and contrast alongside ready-made options ranging from rich, soft and vivid colour to film-inspired black-and-white looks.
A dedicated dial on the body keeps these creative choices right at your fingertips, making it easy to experiment with different colour and monochrome treatments while you shoot. Once you find a look you love, it can give your images a recognisable character without relying on editing afterwards.
Save, collect and share your favourite styles
The free OI.Share app takes creative looks further by letting you build a library of Colour and Monochrome recipes. Choose an image you like, import the recipe and transfer those settings so they’re ready to use.
You can also share recipes with other people, try looks they’ve created and share new ideas as your style develops.
Play with movement, depth and layers
A dedicated Computational Photography button opens up creative ways to capture everyday moments. Live ND16 can blur movement in daylight without adding an ND filter, Focus Stacking is useful for macro and close-ups, while other tools let you layer scenes together and preview the end result.
Handheld High Res Shot provides extra detail for larger prints or more freedom to crop, while HDR helps balance challenging light. For longer exposures, Live Composite, Live Time and Live Bulb give you more ways to play with light and movement. There are also 16 Art Filters and six groups of Scene Modes to see different approaches instantly.
These give you more ways to experiment, from turning passing headlights into trails and smoothing moving water to layering abstract images.
Keep up with people and pets
Advanced intelligent autofocus combines 121 all-cross-type phase-detection points with AI subject detection for people, dogs and cats, helping you stay focused on the moment rather than the focus point.
Keep shooting, even when the light fades
Built-in 5-axis stabilisation reduces camera shake, making multi-second handheld exposures possible. This opens up more creative ways to capture low light and night scenes.
Tell the story with photos and video
A dedicated Still, Video and S&Q switch lets you change how you capture a moment without breaking your flow. Record movies in 4K, shoot vertically for reels and other social content, or experiment with slow and quick-motion sequences.
Colour and Monochrome Profiles carry across to movies, helping stills and footage share the same visual identity. OM-Cinema 1 and 2 provide further options, while a new microphone input supports better-quality audio for vlogging and other content.
Made for everyday life
The body is small enough to become part of your everyday carry, slipping into a bag for work, weekends, trips and whatever happens in between. Its timeless styling, tactile dials and premium detailing make it a camera you’ll enjoy carrying just as much as using.
A built-in 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder gives you a more focused way to frame each shot, while the 393g body keeps things light. Dust resistance and IPX1 splash protection when paired with a compatible OM System splashproof lens also mean a change in the weather doesn’t have to end the day. The new BLS-7 battery is rated for approximately 410 images, helping it keep going through days out and weekends away.
Change your view
As an interchangeable-lens Micro Four Thirds camera, you can add new M.Zuiko Digital lenses as your photography grows. Keep things small with an everyday prime, go wider for travel and landscapes, try macro for tiny details, or explore portraits with a completely different look.
You can personalise it too, not just with lenses, but with straps and other accessories to suit how you carry, shoot and style.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose the 17mm prime over the 14-42mm zoom kit?
The 17mm F1.8 II trades zoom flexibility for a brighter aperture and fixed 34mm equivalent view. It provides more scope in low light and greater control over background blur, while the 14-42mm III is better suited to anyone who wants to change focal length without swapping lenses.
Is a fixed focal length limiting?
Not necessarily. Using one perspective encourages you to change position and think about composition rather than relying on a zoom ring. A zoom is more convenient when you can’t move closer to or further from the subject, so the better choice depends on how you prefer to shoot.
Does the PEN make a good first camera?
Yes. Autofocus and stabilisation take care of some of the technical work, while the electronic viewfinder, creative controls and interchangeable lenses leave plenty of room to explore photography beyond a phone.
What battery does it use and how is it charged?
The included 1285mAh BLS-7 is rated for approximately 410 shots and charges inside the body via USB-C. The optional BCS-7 Battery Charger is available if you want to charge a battery separately.
