The 493-point AF system includes 405 auto-area AF points – five times more than the Z 7 II – while 10 AFarea modes let users optimise their AF setup for any job. Deep-learning AI, meanwhile, powers the most advanced, simultaneous detection of up to nine different subject types. This combines with 3D tracking – a first for Nikon’s mirrorless camera range – to help capture every key moment. From people and their features to animals and vehicles; the Z 9 understands what is being photographed and reacts instantly to changes in subject position, orientation, or velocity.

Game-changing video capabilities.

The Z 9’s incredible imaging power lets users record exquisite full-frame 8K 24p to 60p and 4K 24p to 120p video and time-lapse movies in-camera. 8K video footage at 30p can be recorded for approximately 125 minutes at a time, the longest duration amongst mirrorless camerasi. Furthermore, compatibility with the ProRes 422 HQ recording formatii which reliably meets the wide range of demands of video production. And an upcoming firmware update will enable the recording of RAW 8K video in ultra-smooth 60piii. Full AF/AE and Eye-Detection AF support filming, as Nikon’s new N-RAW format keeps file sizes manageable.

Powerful speed.

Capture more than 1,000 frames in full-resolution RAW at 20fps in one burst. It is also possible to shoot up to 120fps at approximately 11 MP in JPEG normal image quality with full AF/AE capability in the new C+ mode. The world’s fastest scan ratevi virtually does away with rolling-shutter distortion, to such an extent that the mechanical shutter has been removed. Shutter speeds of 1/32000 combine with the camera’s ability to shoot at ISO 64 to deliver incredible depth of field, even in extreme bright-light conditions.

Constant visibility, in real-time.

The Z 9 features the brightest (3000-nit) electronic viewfinder display, with dual-stream technology that ensures always-live, black-out free shooting, so that photographers never miss a moment. The Z 9’s display provides a genuinely continuous real-time view, meaning if a subject moves or there’s the slightest change in the scene being photographed, the user will see it.

Ergonomics and robustness.

In another first for Nikon, the Z 9 is equipped with a 4-axis vertical and horizontal tilting monitor, allowing photographers to adapt to the moment with fast, flexible framing. Every inch the professional’s tool, the camera’s ergonomics, such as the button layout, have been refined and improved based on input by professional photographers. Its robustness, meanwhile, goes beyond the D6, ensuring users can capture everything even under harsh conditions. Nikon are forging ahead with mirrorless lens options for Z-mount with the release of the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S telephoto zoom. This workhorse focal width plays a major role in professional and enthusiast requirements being so versatile for a host of subjects, from sports and action to portraits, weddings, reportage or landscapes.

The 70-200 lens incorporates Nikon’s new SR glass as well as ED elements to minimise chromatic aberration. As a result colour fringing is excellently controlled, images are sharper than achievable before and contrast is exceptional for both stills and video. For videographers focus breathing has all but been eliminated and electromagnetic aperture control allows a more natural change of exposure while recording. Autofocus is smooth, silent and quick, allowing this lens to perform in situations demanding silent capture such as weddings or wildlife.

The Nikkor optics incorporated in this telephoto provide professional level results through Nikon’s most advanced optical engineering practices. The optics are designed with 21 elements in 18 groups (including 6 ED glass, 2 aspherical lens, 1 fluorite and 1 SR lens element). This ensures the best possible results consistently, with high contrast and low aberrations, including well controlled colour fringing. Vibration reduction helps with capturing sharp results even when handheld although the included tripod mount will be essential for certain applications. 

A constant bright aperture allows photographers to shoot in low light situations and focusing is achieved through an internal focus stepping motor system (STM) even in difficult situations. The nine bladed aperture provides smooth out of focus bokeh areas when the lens is open and weather sealing allows work to continue whatever the conditions. Glass elements have Nano Crystal coatings applied as well as an ARNEO coat conceived with Nikon’s mirrorless mount. A fluorine coated front lens element helps to reduce smears or dirt on images. 

This is capable of extremely close focus at just 50cm (1.64’) allowing photographers to shoot even more creatively. The compact size and weight at around 22cm long at 1.3kg. allows users to bring this lens to virtually any assignment as well as for all day shooting, including landscape or nature photography. A common 77mm filter thread size ensures existing filters can be used with this lens, including Nikon’s own brand variants.
