Canon RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM Lens Summary

Canon has delivered once again with a world-class super telephoto prime for their mirrorless range with the Canon RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM Lens. At just 3.34kg this is the smallest and lightest lens of its kind ever released, designed to achieve incredible results with extremely distant subjects, which fall predominantly into sports, action and wildlife photography subjects.

Combined with leading EOS R mirrorless cameras the lens achieves a 4-stop stabilisation advantage to reduce shake when handholding and retains full compatibility with the RF 2x and RF 1.4x extender for an unparalleled focal range previously unavailable for the RF lens range.

Optimised weight distribution is made possible thanks to the lightweight magnesium alloy body allowing users to handhold the lens with 1200mm reach. This combines with L-Series build quality which includes heat insulating paint and Fluorine repelling coatings on the outer elements.

Key Features

  • The smallest lens of its size ever released at 3.34kg
  • up to 4 stops image stabilisation
  • 9-blade circular aperture can move in 1/8th steps
  • Customisable controls
  • Minimum focus distance of 4.3m

Canon RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM Lens in More Detail

Maximum reach with the best quality

The RF 1200mm F8L IS USM delivers incredible telephoto images while offering the longest native focal length for mirrorless cameras. With a useful f/8 maximum aperture and 4-stop Image Stabiliser you can expect excellent results in low light, surpassing all expectations.

Surprisingly practical with outstanding results

Canon’s most powerful telephoto lens is extremely versatile with optimised weight distribution which inspires confidence. Fluorite, UD and Super UD lens elements with advanced coatings deliver stunningly sharp images for subjects far off in the distance.

Tough and responsive

The RF 1200mm F8L IS USM’s L-series build puts priority on usability with a minimum focus distance of 4.3m allowing subjects to be tracked over a great range. Heat insulating paint protects the optics while dust and moisture is repelled by Fluorine on the outer elements.

Built for EOS R

The RF 1200mm F8L IS USM sits at the very top of the Canon lens range together with the equally impressive Canon RF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM Lens, which was launched at the same time. An aperture mechanism offers 1/8th stop increments making this super telephoto also ideal for video, while the IS system works with in-body stabilisation for the best stability possible.

Customisable control and advanced usability

The RF 1200mm F8L IS USM has a host of custom options with two focus pre-sets and a customisable AF stop button. It’s fully compatible with Canon’s RF extenders and focus direction can be reversed if you’ve come to Canon from another system.

Looking to sell your Canon RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM Lens?

Our Verdict

The list of telephoto options for the RF system has just swelled with the release of this prime super telephoto RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM Lens. It arrives together with a prime 800mm giving professional photographers and serious enthusiasts a whole new level of options. The RF mount has enabled Canon to design the smallest and lightest lens of this type ever at just 3.34kg. Combined with the right camera body this lens provides up to 4-stop IS, which means users can even handhold a lens capable of reaching 1200mm through to 2400mm if you add the 2X TC. This sounds quite staggering because it is, with Canon once again providing potential EOS R system users with lots to consider. Customisation ensures professional workflows can be streamlined, along with a reverse focus throw for users joining from other systems. Whether you’re a pap, spy photographer, sports shooter or wildlife photographer, there in no other lens able to perform to these standards at this focal length at the time of launch.
