Voigtlander 90mm APO-LANTHAR f/4 Close Focus Lens VM Mount Black Summary

The Voigtlander 90mm APO-LANTHAR f/4 Close Focus is a compact manual-focus telephoto lens for Leica M-mount and compatible full-frame rangefinder cameras. Its apochromatic design suppresses chromatic aberration while maintaining resolution and contrast from infinity to close-focus distances, suited to portraits, landscapes, travel and detail photography.

At 54.8mm long and 235g, it balances well on M-mount bodies while preserving a clear optical viewfinder. The Close Focus mechanism extends the minimum focusing distance to 0.5m using live view, giving greater reproduction than conventional rangefinder lenses without a loss in optical performance.

Voigtlander 90mm APO-LANTHAR f/4 Close Focus Lens VM Mount Black In More Detail

Apochromatic optical performance

The eight-element, seven-group construction uses six anomalous partial dispersion elements to correct axial chromatic aberration, maintaining resolution, contrast and edge definition throughout the frame. This is particularly useful in high-contrast scenes where colour fringing can appear around fine detail.

Compact telephoto handling

At 54.8mm and 235g, the lens obstructs less of the optical viewfinder than a larger telephoto, keeping composition comfortable on Leica M and compatible VM-mount rangefinder cameras.

Extended Close Focus

Rangefinder coupling operates from infinity to 0.7m, with a positive click marking the transition into the extended range. Using live view or an electronic viewfinder, the Close Focus mechanism extends focusing to 0.5m, reaching a maximum magnification of 0.28x for smaller subjects and fine detail.

Precision manual focusing

A precision-machined all-metal helicoid gives smooth, consistent manual focus, supporting both traditional rangefinder use and precise live view composition within the close-focus range.

Digital sensor optimisation

The design is optimised for full-frame digital sensors as well as film, maintaining sharpness and contrast across the frame. A ten-blade diaphragm produces a rounded aperture through much of its range, contributing to smooth background rendering at the 90mm focal length.

Metal construction and included hood

The all-metal barrel supports long-term durability and precise mechanical operation. A dedicated screw-in metal hood, extending around 9mm beyond the lens, minimises intrusion into the rangefinder viewfinder while reducing flare in challenging light.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. It uses the VM (Leica M) mount, with rangefinder coupling from infinity to 0.7m on compatible bodies.

Can it focus closer than a standard rangefinder lens?

Yes. Using live view or an electronic viewfinder, it focuses down to 0.5m, compared with 0.7m through the rangefinder, with a tactile click marking the transition.

Does autofocus work?

No. It is fully manual for both focus and aperture control.

What does APO-LANTHAR mean?

It identifies Voigtlander's apochromatic lens design, correcting axial chromatic aberration and colour fringing to improve sharpness and colour accuracy.
