Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Septon Aspherical Lens for Sony E Mount Summary

The Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Septon Aspherical for Sony E is a compact, full-frame pancake-style standard prime lens made exclusively for mirrorless cameras. The name references the original Septon lenses developed for Voigtlander SLR systems in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Its optical construction consists of 7 elements in 6 groups, incorporating an aspherical element based on the Orthometar type design, which is known for short optical length and very low distortion. The lens measures 30.0mm from the mount flange and weighs 165g, maintaining a minimal profile on Sony mirrorless bodies.

Electronic contacts transmit Exif data, support 5-axis in-body image stabilisation that utilises subject distance information, and enable magnified viewfinder display via focus ring operation.

Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Septon Aspherical Lens for Sony E Mount in More Detail

Optical design

The Septon 40mm f/2 Aspherical has a 6-group, 7-element design, which is derived from the Orthometar type, with the addition of an aspherical element to maintain compact dimensions while also controlling distortion. The short optical length contributes to the lens’s slimline pancake profile.

The 40mm focal length provides a 57.3° angle of view on full-frame Sony cameras. This fits between traditional 35mm and 50mm lenses, offering a natural field of view suited to general photography, which is very similar to human vision.

The 10-blade diaphragm maintains consistent aperture geometry from f/2 to f/16, while the aperture ring operates in 1/3-stop increments.

Close focusing

The minimum focusing distance is 0.3m, allowing closer framing than many standard prime lenses. The maximum reproduction ratio of 1:5.3 supports close-up compositions where the subject can fill the frame.

Electronic communication and stabilisation

The Sony E Mount version incorporates electronic contacts and a distance encoder. This enables Exif data recording and compatibility with camera bodies featuring 5-axis in-body image stabilisation that utilises subject distance information for shift blur correction.

Turning the focus ring activates magnified viewfinder display on compatible Sony bodies, assisting with precise manual focusing.

Build and handling

The barrel is constructed entirely from metal for rigidity and durability. Overall length measures 30.0mm from the mount flange, with a maximum diameter of φ61.7mm. Weight is 165g.

A 52mm filter thread accepts standard screw-in filters, and a dome-shaped screw-in metal hood is included, which keeps the lens compact.
