Tascam Professional 4 Track Field Recorder Summary

The FR-AV4 is a professional 4-track field recorder for video production, location sound and multichannel audio capture. It records four input channels plus a stereo mix to SDXC media, giving users six recorded tracks in total.

It sits in Tascam’s field recording range as a compact recorder with built-in timecode generation, HDMI synchronisation and 32-bit float capture. Four Ultra HDDA mic preamps with an equivalent input noise of -127 dBu support clean recording from external microphones, while dual A/D converters provide a dynamic range of up to 133 dB.

This makes it suitable for documentary work, interviews, multi-mic shoots and camera-based productions where audio must stay aligned with video. The recorder also works as a 6-in/2-out USB-C audio interface, supporting recording workflows in the field and desktop setups from the same unit.

Tascam Professional 4 Track Field Recorder In More Detail

32-bit float recording

Dual A/D converters support 32-bit float capture with up to 133 dB dynamic range. This helps maintain usable recordings across changing sound levels without clipping and reduces the need for precise gain setting during fast-moving shoots.

Four mic preamps

Inputs 1 to 4 use balanced XLR/TRS combo connectors with Tascam Ultra HDDA preamps. Equivalent input noise is rated at -127 dBu, and phantom power at 24V or 48V can be switched individually for each XLR input.

Six-track capture

The recorder captures four isolated input channels and a stereo mix at the same time. WAV recording is available at 24-bit or 32-bit float up to 192kHz, with BEXT and iXML metadata support for production workflows.

Timecode support

A built-in timecode generator supports Free Run, Time of Day, jam sync and external synchronisation. Timecode can be routed through TC in, TC out, HDMI, USB and the camera output, which supports alignment across cameras, recorders and external devices.

HDMI synchronisation

HDMI 2.1 input and output support shared clock synchronisation, record triggering and video pass-through up to 4K at 60Hz or 8K at 30Hz. This allows audio and video to stay aligned while integrating the recorder into camera and monitor-recorder setups.

Cascading and remote control

Multiple units can be cascaded via HDMI when more than four inputs are needed. With the optional AK-BT2 adapter, the recorder supports Bluetooth sync with compatible Atomos systems, wireless monitoring and app control for up to five supported Tascam devices.

USB audio interface

The unit can also operate as a 6-in/2-out USB-C audio interface for Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS and Android. This supports location recording, voice work, livestreaming and desktop production from the same recorder.
