Tascam Portacapture X6 High-Resolution Multi-Track Handheld Recorder Summary

The Portacapture X6 is a high-resolution multi-track handheld audio recorder with built-in microphones, XLR inputs and touchscreen operation. It records up to six tracks simultaneously to microSD media, combining portable recording with multichannel capability.

It sits within Tascam’s portable recorder range as a touchscreen-based system with app-style operation and 32-bit float recording. Two built-in microphones and two XLR inputs support both quick capture and more controlled recording setups.

Recording at up to 96kHz in 32-bit float allows levels to be adjusted after capture without clipping. A built-in mixer, processing tools and multiple recording apps support a range of workflows including video production, podcasting, music recording and field capture.

Tascam Portacapture X6 Handheld Recorder In More Detail

App-based recording system

The touchscreen interface uses a launcher system with dedicated recording apps. Each app applies optimised settings for different scenarios, reducing setup time and simplifying operation in the field.

Available recording apps include:

  1. MANUAL for full multi-track control
  2. VOICE for interviews, meetings and dictation
  3. PODCAST for up to four voices with mix-minus support
  4. MUSIC for instrument and vocal recording
  5. POCKET STUDIO for short multitrack recording with punch-in
  6. FIELD for environmental and location recording
  7. ASMR with visual feedback based on input signal

32-bit float recording

The recorder captures audio in 32-bit float, allowing recordings to retain detail across a wide dynamic range. Levels can be adjusted after recording without clipping, which supports unpredictable recording conditions.

Built-in microphones

The integrated condenser microphones can be rotated between AB and XY configurations. AB provides a wider stereo image, while XY improves mono compatibility and localisation.

Inputs and track count

The unit records four input channels and a stereo mix simultaneously, giving six tracks in total. Inputs include the built-in microphones and two XLR connectors for external microphones or line-level sources.

Mic preamps and phantom power

The XLR inputs use Tascam HDDA preamps with low-noise performance. Phantom power at 24V or 48V can be applied individually, supporting condenser microphones and professional audio sources.

Additional connections

A 3.5mm stereo input allows connection of wireless receivers, cameras or external microphones with plug-in power. A 3.5mm output can send audio to a camera or external device with selectable attenuation.

Built-in processing

The recorder includes EQ, low-cut filter, compressor, limiter, noise gate and auto gain control. Reverb effects and MS decoding are available, and markers can be added automatically or manually. XRI metadata stores recording settings within BWF files.

USB audio interface

The X6 operates as a 6-in/2-out USB-C audio interface. It supports recording directly to a computer or mobile device while also allowing input signals to be recorded to SD card. Mix-minus is available in podcast workflows.

Wireless control and timecode

With the optional AK-BT1 adapter, the recorder supports wireless control via a mobile app and timecode synchronisation with compatible Atomos devices.

Firmware features

Firmware updates add workflow improvements. Version 1.10 introduced 32-bit float USB audio, mix-minus in the PODCAST app and shared presets. Version 2.0 added the POCKET STUDIO app, real-time mixdown and buffered background recording in the FIELD app.
