To coincide with their 75th anniversary, Tamron has released the second-generation Tamron 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 Lens for Sony FE full-frame mirrorless cameras. This compact all-in-one 8x zoom lens brings a number of upgrades to the highly popular lens, while extending the zoom reach from 28-200mm to 25-200mm in this generation.
Upgrades begin with improved image quality as well as faster, more precise autofocus, which is powered by Tamron’s tried-and-tested VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism. At the wide end of the zoom range, you can also achieve a maximum magnification ratio of 1:1.9 for half-macro images, extending the versatility of this all-in-one even further.
The compact zoom lens for Sony cameras measures just 121.5mm long, weighs 575g, and features Tamron’s unified 67mm front lens filter thread, so you can share lens filters between various Tamron lenses. It comes with a flower-shaped hood to maintain image quality in bright or backlit conditions, and is compatible with the handy Lens Utility™ software for customisation and firmware updates.
Both the zoom and focus rings are smooth and offer refined handling, with a comfortable design that is easy to use and delivers excellent image quality across the range. All-in-one zoom versatility
The 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 Lens for Sony FE is the successor to the popular 28-200mm Sony E mount lens, which has been released to coincide with Tamron’s 75th anniversary. The second-generation design extends the wide end of the zoom range to 25mm, which creates an 8x zoom that covers everything from landscapes to telephoto subjects. Despite the extensive zoom range it is compact at just 121.5mm long and weighs only 575g, providing an all-in-one option for everyday photography as well as travel.
Improved optics and image quality
The optical design includes 18 elements arranged in 14 groups, with a design that delivers improved image quality across the zoom range. The 9-blade circular diaphragm renders smooth rounded bokeh, contributing to depth and subject separation when capturing portraits or close-up shots.
Fast, quiet autofocus
Autofocus has been upgraded with Tamron’s swift VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor, which provides faster, more accurate focusing with minimal noise. This allows for both stills and video recording, with good focus performance even when tracking moving subjects such as pets, people, or sports.
Close-up capability
A notable feature of this zoom is its half-macro magnification, with a 1:1.9 maximum ratio at the wide end and 1:3.9 at 200mm. Minimum focus distances are 0.16m at the wide end and 0.8m at telephoto, allowing for frame-filling close-up images of flowers, insects, and any small objects without the need to change lenses.
Handling and ergonomics
The updated lens barrel offers smoother operation with improved ergonomics. Both the zoom and focus rings turn fluidly, providing precise manual control when needed. The lens includes Tamron’s unified 67mm filter thread, which matches many other Tamron lenses, making it easier to share filters and other accessories across the range. The Tamron 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 Lens builds on the success of the original 28-200mm, refining key features while maintaining the compact, lightweight design that made the original so popular in the first place. The wider 25mm wide end, faster and quieter VXD autofocus system, and improved optical performance all contribute to an even more versatile all-in-one zoom lens for Sony users.
Image quality is great across the frame, and the ability to achieve half-macro magnification at 25mm adds creative flexibility for close-up shots. The lens handles easily on full-frame mirrorless bodies, with smooth zoom and focus controls, and a compact 67mm filter thread that matches many of Tamron’s other E-mount lenses.
This second-generation 8x zoom is a good all-rounder for everyday content creation including travel, portraits, and snapshots. Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy.
- Like New – The equipment is in a condition as if you have just bought it from the manufacturer. The item is still considered to be ‘Like New’ even without the original packaging and accessories. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect working order. Lenses are optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect excellent order.
- Cameras – Should have no marks on the LCD screen
- Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements and optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen may have scratches or wear that is starting to affect the display.
- Lenses – May have slight dust inside that does not affect images. The mount shows signs of use.
- Well Used – The equipment will show significant signs of wear. The paintwork will be coming away in large areas exposing the metal work, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body.
- Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens.
