Ultra-wide 12-20mm focal range
The 12-20mm focal range extends beyond the 14mm starting point of many professional ultra wide-angle zooms, allowing more of a landscape, building or night sky to fit into a single frame. At 12mm it also exaggerates foreground perspective, making it particularly effective for landscapes, interiors and architectural photography.
Optical design
The optical design uses 17 elements in 12 groups, including one XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) element, three GM aspherical elements and additional special glass elements. Together they reduce distortion, chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare, helping maintain sharp stars towards the edges of the frame alongside high detail from centre to corner.
Close focusing
The lens focuses as close as 18cm at 12mm, providing a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.8. This allows close foreground subjects to be combined with expansive backgrounds for compositions with strong depth and perspective.
Handling
Despite its constant F2.8 aperture, the Nikon Z lens weighs around 585g. Dedicated switches and control rings provide direct operation, while the integrated lens hood protects the front element. As a result, conventional front filters cannot be fitted, with filters instead mounted using the integrated rear filter holder.
