Sony XLR Shotgun Microphone ECM-778 Summary

The Sony XLR Shotgun Microphone ECM-778 is a compact XLR shotgun microphone that captures broadcast-quality sound for video, film and location recording. With a highly directional supercardioid polar pattern and extended high-frequency response up to 40kHz, it captures crisp, clear dialogue while effectively rejecting ambient and off-axis noise. This makes it well suited for use on a boompole or mounted directly to a camera.

This XLR microphone is ultra compact too, measuring just 176mm and weighing in at only 102g, allowing the ECM-778 to be easily mounted to a compact boom or camera setup, while its machined aluminium and brass construction ensures high durability and low susceptibility to environmental interference. The robust housing reduces handling noise and vibration, and includes a switchable low-cut filter to help control r wind or operator movement at the source.

The mic is powered via standard 48V phantom power and outputs through a balanced XLR 3-pin connector. A full accessory kit is included with foam and fur windscreens, a microphone holder and two spacers for mounting flexibility, along with a hard case for storage and transport.

Sony XLR Shotgun Microphone ECM-778 in More Detail

Professional Sound Capture

The ECM-778 captures accurate audio with a wide frequency response of 40Hz–40kHz. Its supercardioid polar pattern provides focused front pick-up with effective rejection of ambient noise, which is ideal for recording dialogue in both controlled, and outdoor settings.

Compact Field-Ready Design

At just 176mm long and 102g, this Sony XLR microphone is highly portable and fits easily on camera rigs or boom poles and its compact size is well suited to working in smaller sets, vehicles or interiors.

Durable and Vibration-Resistant

The microphone body is made from machined aluminium, with a brass acoustic tube that helps to maintain tonal stability. This structure suppresses vibration and minimises interference from electrical noise or environmental elements.

Low-Cut Filter and Reliable Power

A low-cut filter switch on the body enables quick reduction of low-frequency handling and wind noise. The ECM-778 is powered via standard 44-52V phantom power and connects using a professional XLR 3-pin output for consistent signal transmission.
