A fixed 35mm f/2 ZEISS Sonnar T* lens has been optimised for the sensor with micron-level precision, in order to deliver superb sharpness and contrast edge to edge. The addition of an AI processing unit brings sophisticated subject recognition and real-time tracking to the Sony compact camera range for the first time, making it a formidable B-camera for professionals or a premium compact for discerning photographers for travel and everyday shoots.
With support for 4K video, 8-bit and 10-bit image profiles, full Creative Look options all within an impressive tactile body design, the RX1R III offers a refined hybrid experience for street, travel and everyday storytelling.
Despite its high res video and stills imaging capabilities, the body measures just 113.3 x 67.9 x 87.5mm and weighs only 498g including a battery and memory card. Sony’s Highest Full-Frame Image Quality in a Compact Camera
The RX1R III features Sony’s renowned 61.0MP Exmor R CMOS sensor, which renders extremely high resolution with low noise and wide dynamic range. The sensor includes gapless on-chip lenses and an anti-reflective coating to improve light capture and deliver smooth tonal gradation.
These sensor is paired with the equally well-known BIONZ XR processor, in order to deliver fast image processing and responsive control while maintaining exceptional detail, improved image quality and AWB performance.
ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 Fixed Lens
A key feature of the RX1R III is the integrated ZEISS 35mm f/2 lens. The fixed design enables micron-level alignment between the lens and sensor, which maximises sharpness and reduces aberrations. This also allows the camera body to remain extremely compact without hindering the flagship-level optical performance.
AI-Based Autofocus and Subject Recognition
A dedicated AI processing unit seen in various high-end Alpha cameras powers human pose estimation and subject recognition of people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and aircraft. The AI-powered system detects eyes, faces, heads and body posture, even when they become partially obscured, or when facing away from the camera or wearing sunglasses or a helmet.
Real-time Tracking uses this information to maintain accurate focus across a wide range of scenes and subjects, allowing the creator to concentrate on framing and storytelling rather than focusing.
Sony has also added an Auto mode, which reliably takes care of subject selection in most cases, which is a new feature for Alpha users.
Wide, high-density AF
The RX1R III features a 693-point phase detection autofocus system that covers approximately 78% of the image area. This delivers precise focus even when subjects are small or near the edge of the frame. Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF combines phase detection for speed and tracking with contrast detection for pinpoint accuracy, helping to maintain sharp focus across varied subjects and compositions.
Step Crop Shooting with One-Touch Framing
With the Step Crop Shooting function, users can instantly switch between 35mm (60MP), 50mm (29MP) and 70mm (15MP) equivalent fields of view for virtual zooming into the frame. This offers greater flexibility to capture more distant subjects, while preserving high image quality, which is beneficial when you can’t physically get closer to your subject.
Advanced Exposure and Colour Rendering
The RX1R III’s exposure system also harnesses the AI unit in order to better detect skin tones and adjust automatically for consistent results, even in backlit conditions. With the impressive 15 stops of dynamic range and support for ISO 100–32,000 (expandable to 102,400), the camera handles a broad range of lighting conditions with ease.
Creative Look Presets
This Sony compact camera comes with 12 Creative Look presets, including FL, FL2 and FL3 for cinematic output. Users can adjust up to eight parameters for unified and customisable in-camera content creation, adjusting as colour depth, contrast, sharpness and brightness.
Accurate Autofocus in Low Light
Autofocus is exceptionally fast and precise, even in challenging lighting conditions. The system is rated down to EV -4.0 in AF-S mode (at ISO 100), enabling confident AF during dusk, night scenes or during interior shoots where natural light is relatively low.
Viewfinder and Monitor
Framing is very intuitive thanks to the high-resolution 2.36 million-dot XGA OLED viewfinder, which has 0.70x magnification. The 3.0-inch LCD touchscreen also features 2.36 million dots, with a high-brightness Sunny Weather mode and vertical orientation support for a fluid shooting experience in any orientation.
Refined Compact Design
Sony has refined the third generation RX1R III, which is made using a rigid magnesium alloy shell with carefully machined parts for a premium feel. The body is compact and measures 113.3 x 67.9 x 87.5mm, while weighing in at just 498g. A completely flat top plate and refined grip surface with rhombic-convex shaped main texture improve handling without having any unnecessary protrusions from the dials. The top flat surface includes a Multi Interface (MI) Shoe, which allows for battery and cable-free accessories.
The body also features a new iron black matte coating that combines texture, density and finish to deliver a consistent, tactile feel across the body. This subtle surface treatment adds to the camera’s sense of solidity and premium build, while enhancing the overall user experience.
Power and Connectivity
Up to 300 stills can be captured on a single charge using the compact NP-FW50 battery. USB-C with Power Delivery enables fast charging, while built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with support for Sony’s Creators’ App provides streamlined media transfers to mobile or cloud services for storage, editing and collabs.
The camera also includes a single SD UHS-II Memory Card Slot, HDMI (Type-D) port, and Mic Port for more advanced content creation.

Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy.
- Like New – The equipment is in a condition as if you have just bought it from the manufacturer. The item is still considered to be ‘Like New’ even without the original packaging and accessories. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect working order. Lenses are optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect excellent order.
- Cameras – Should have no marks on the LCD screen
- Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements and optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen may have scratches or wear that is starting to affect the display.
- Lenses – May have slight dust inside that does not affect images. The mount shows signs of use.
