Sony FX6 Summary

Sony is firmly established in broadcast circles with a number of professional video cameras available and the FX6 Cinema Line is the first of a new breed of compact full frame video camcorders to join the range. The FX6 camera has been developed to cater for advanced workflows with professional recording formats including DCI 4K in XAVC Intra 422 10bit Class 300 with SDI Raw at 60fps. The FX6 is compatible with E mount lenses including the new cine line Sony FE C 16-35mm T3.1 allowing the camera to record image stabilisation data for reduced processing requirements.

Key features

  • 10.2 megapixel full frame Exmor R sensor with BIONZ XR processor
  • S-Log3 with base ISO 800
  • 15+ stops of dynamic range
  • Focal plane phase detection from 627 AF points with latest Eye and Face AF systems
  • 120fps QHFD and 240fps Full HD
  • Electronically controlled ND filter system
  • Durable lightweight magnesium alloy chassis with modular grip and handle
  • Internal recording for DCI 4K with 10-bit / 4.2.2 colour sampling
  • New S-Cinetone with accurate skin colour and softer tones

The new compact camera module weighs 890g and measures just 116mm x 153mm which is even smaller than the FS5 II camera, yet is versatile enough for mounting onto camera drones. High / low angle recording is simple thanks to nine attachment points for a high resolution LCD.

Sony FX6 Cinema Line Video Camcorder In Detail

In-house development seeks to set new standards across Sony broadcast video cameras with new compatible E mount lenses starting to appear. These are being matched throughout through the optical design, lens actuator through to the image sensor and processor.

Meta data can be flagged with a new dedicated OK flag button along with OK/NG/KEEP marks which appear in editing thumbnails in Catalyst. Camera rotation meta data is also recorded which is automatically rotated when playing a clip.

Our Verdict

The new FX6 video camera from Sony provides professional videographers with a completely new full frame tool for making high quality movies. Compatibility with E mount lenses as well as new high quality Sony Cine line lenses facilitates a more streamlined workflow with access to the latest AF systems and stabilisation meta data. The inclusion of a full frame sensor delivers several advantages including wide dynamic range, broad ISO capabilities, together with pleasing soft out of focus areas associated with full frame cameras.

Recording capabilities will satisfy even the most demanding users with 15 stops of dynamic range, S35 scanning at 60fps in DCI 4K. The new S-Cinetone captures alluring, natural skin tones compatible with XAVC-I 422 10bit and slow motion scenes can be recorded at up to 240fps. whilst being fan cooled. Bionz XR processors are future proofed providing up to 4x faster processing capabilities and the sensor boasts 627 focal plane AF points. The level of technology belies the compact nature of the camera which weighs only 890g and provides yet more flexibility from an array of pro inputs as well as the modular smart grip and handle system. We are certain the FX6 will appeal to existing upgraders as well as newcomers to Sony’s growing line of broadcast capable video cameras.

We Love

  • Compact, lightweight yet extremely rugged weather sealed magnesium alloy chassis
  • Internal fan for longer recording times, crucial with up to 240fps in Full HD
  • Varied professional recording formats including DCI 4K in XAVC Intra 422 10bit Class 300 with SDI Raw at 60fps
  • Dedicated Metadata button along with stabilisation and orientation data for quicker processing times
  • Comprehensive professional inputs including XLR, HDMI, SDI and nine LCD input options
