Product Summary

Clipped dialogue and missed gain changes can ruin a take. With professional audio quality, extensive recording flexibility and integrated backup, the ECM-W5 takes much of the worry out of capturing sound. Slot the receiver into a compatible camera's Multi Interface Shoe for a direct digital connection, with no additional cable or separate synchronisation required.

Everything arrives in one kit: two compact microphones, a receiver and a charging case. Each unit can record independently, providing an additional copy of important audio. Expand to four separate voice channels, monitor through compatible Bluetooth headphones or connect to a smartphone or computer.

From interviews and live events to filmmaking and streaming, this compact system gives solo creators and small production teams the freedom to concentrate on their content.

32-Bit Float

Capture quiet dialogue and sudden changes in volume with greater confidence. The extended dynamic range of 32-bit float provides substantial flexibility to adjust levels in post-production, reducing the need for constant gain adjustments during interviews, live performances and unpredictable recording situations.

For maximum sample rate, choose 96 kHz/24-bit. Alternatively, select 48 kHz/32-bit float for greater editing flexibility. Manual gain adjustment from -12 to +12 remains available, alongside automatic control and noise reduction options.

One Workflow

Through the digital audio interface of a compatible camera, sound is recorded directly into the video file. Supported models can also create a separate WAV recording in-camera, ready for audio editing without extraction.

This integrated workflow reduces the number of separate recording devices and files to manage, making production and post-production more efficient.

500 m Range

An optimised transmission system with Bluetooth frequency hopping maintains stable, low-latency audio, including in environments with competing radio signals.

Communication distances of up to 500 m are possible with an unobstructed line of sight, although performance varies with obstacles, surrounding equipment and interference. This provides considerable flexibility for location filming, event coverage and subjects positioned away from the camera.

Four Tracks

The supplied pair covers conversations and interviews immediately. Add two ECM-W5T microphones, sold separately, and the receiver supports four speakers, with independent audio channels available on compatible recording equipment.

Each voice can be adjusted individually during editing, providing greater control over multi-person productions without requiring multiple receivers.

Backup Recording

Each microphone incorporates 64 GB of internal storage, providing up to approximately 90 hours of independent recording, depending on settings.

When internal recording is enabled, audio is captured separately from the radio connection. This provides a valuable backup if transmission is interrupted or an alternative recording is needed.

Files transfer to a computer over USB-C, directly or through the charging case. Each unit can also operate independently as a compact recorder for voice notes, interviews and ambient sound.

Timecode for Multi-Camera

Synchronise footage and audio more efficiently with integrated timecode functionality. The receiver outputs timing information to supported recording equipment, simplifying alignment during post-production.

USB SYNC provides an additional option for compatible Sony cameras, synchronising with timecode stored in video metadata.

Other timecode functions depend on the connected equipment.

Monitor and Record Without Cables

Pair compatible Sony Bluetooth LE Audio headphones with the receiver to monitor sound while recording.

Supported headphones can also provide an additional microphone source, while binaural recording with compatible equipment captures spatial information for a more immersive listening experience.

These options provide greater flexibility for presenters, camera operators and productions where conventional wired monitoring is inconvenient.

Connect to Cameras, Phones and Computers

The included USB adaptor supports connection to compatible smartphones and computers using USB Audio Class 2.0, including supported high-resolution recording modes.

This makes the system suitable for podcasts, streaming, voice recording and mobile content production as well as conventional filmmaking.

A 3.5 mm mono external input on both the receiver and microphones accepts compatible lavaliers, including the separately available ECM-L1, allowing discreet placement close to the speaker.

Simple Controls and Convenient Mounting

The compact microphones clip to clothing or attach using the supplied magnets. Their upright shape also makes them comfortable to hold for reporting and presentations.

Dedicated REC buttons provide direct recording control, while the receiver offers access to gain settings, noise cut and low-cut filtering.

Opening the charging case places the receiver into standby, and removing the components powers them on. Automatic power control can also link operation to compatible cameras, with remote transmitter activation available.

Durable Power

Each microphone and the receiver operate for up to seven hours independently on a full charge.

When the receiver draws power through a compatible Multi Interface Shoe, the charging case can replenish the other units, extending total operation to approximately 11 hours.

The case also keeps the components together during transport, reducing preparation time between locations.

Sustainable Materials

Recycled plastics account for more than 41% of the plastic weight of the main unit, excluding supplied accessories, as part of Sony's Road to Zero environmental programme.

Packaging initiatives also aim to reduce reliance on conventional plastic materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cameras are compatible?

Digital audio through the Multi Interface Shoe requires a supported model. Advanced functions, including separate WAV recording and timecode, have additional compatibility requirements. Check the manufacturer's compatibility information before purchasing.

Can I record 32-bit float at 96 kHz?

No. The system supports 48 kHz/32-bit float or 96 kHz/24-bit recording, depending on the connected equipment.

Can I use it without a camera?

Yes. The microphones support standalone recording to internal storage. Compatible smartphones and computers can also receive audio through USB.

Can I attach a lavalier?

Yes. Compatible external microphones connect through the 3.5 mm inputs, allowing more discreet positioning on clothing.

Does the receiver need charging separately?

Not when connected to equipment that supplies power through the Multi Interface Shoe. Otherwise, it operates from its internal rechargeable battery.
