Sigma 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens Silver for L Mount Summary
The Sigma 50mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens in Silver sets a new benchmark for compact standard primes, by providing a premium all-metal build and excellent results from a lightweight, mirrorless format. It’s part of Sigma’s Contemporary series, which means that this is a compact L mount lens for full-frame cameras, which doesn’t compromise on quality or handling.
With a weight of just 350g and 68mm length, this 50mm f/2 prime combines a timeless design with high-end materials, including a knurled aluminium focus ring, aperture ring, lens hood and even a magnetic metal lens cap. The result is a tactile lens that feels refined and robust, while being enjoyable to use and stylish when mounted on a camera.
Its optical performance is equally impressive, due to an advanced construction, which features 11 elements in 9 groups, including three aspherical and one SLD element, for sharp, controlled rendering even at f/2. With well controlled chromatic aberration, reduced flare, and soft, natural bokeh, it’s a superb choice for street, lifestyle and portrait photography, amongst other subjects.
Thanks to fast, quiet autofocus from Sigma’s stepping motor technology and its bright aperture, the 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens is also perfect for handheld low-light shooting. Whether you’re building a compact system or adding a stylish prime to your kit, this is an excellent everyday lens for any L-Mount creator.
Sigma 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens Silver for L Mount in More Detail
Compact, Solid and Built to Last
Despite its premium materials, the Sigma 50mm f/2 is lightweight at just 350g and measures only 68mm in length. Aluminium is used throughout the construction, including the barrel, focus and aperture rings, and lens hood, which gives the lens a classic look and robust feel. Additionally, it features a weather-sealed mount and ships with both a standard plastic cap and magnetic metal cap. Sigma’s optional magnetic lens cap holder can be clipped to a bag or jacket to keep the cap close by while shooting.
Sharp Optics in a Compact Lens
Inside the 50mm f/2 boasts an optical design of 11 elements in 9 groups, with three aspherical and one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) element to control aberration and distortion. It delivers consistent sharpness across the frame, even at the widest aperture, and is well suited to high-resolution sensors. A Super Multi-Layer Coating helps to reduce flare and ghosting when shooting into light sources, especially when backlit.
Natural Bokeh and Depth Control
A bright f/2 aperture and rounded 9-blade diaphragm provide soft, gradual bokeh, with good subject separation and pleasing background blur. While not as fast as the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens for L mount, this model offers a lighter and more portable choice for creators who still want control over depth of field and great low-light performance.
Reliable Everyday Nifty 50
The 50mm focal length is one of the most versatile options for full-frame photographers, and is ideal for portraits, lifestyle, general shooting and much more. This lens excels at waist-up portraits, offering a flattering perspective, with a natural field of view and balanced handling, even on smaller mirrorless bodies.
Part of Sigma’s Contemporary Series
As part of the Contemporary series, this lens shares a consistent style, handling and rendering with others in the range. It’s designed to complement compact mirrorless cameras, for strong cohesion when used alongside other Contemporary lenses.
