Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art Lens for L Mount Summary
The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art Lens for L Mount is the next-generation large-aperture wide-angle prime for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It replaces the previous DG DN version within Sigma’s Art series of L-Mount lenses, continuing the popular 35mm f/1.4 range while prioritising optical performance over smaller Contemporary designs.
This focal length is an important choice for documentary, wedding, portrait and environmental photography, delivering a natural perspective with good subject separation at f/1.4. The updated DG II introduces a redesigned optical system alongside a more compact design, aligning the lens more closely with current L-Mount mirrorless camera bodies from Leica, Panasonic and Sigma.
It features a 67mm filter thread, weather-resistant structure and manual control via an aperture ring and dual AFL buttons. the Sigma 35mm Art now better supports both still and video content creation in a body that is shorter and lighter than the previous generation.
Overview and Key Improvements
The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art introduces a fully redesigned optical and mechanical structure compared to the previous generation.
The optical construction now consists of 15 elements in 12 groups, including four aspherical elements and two SLD elements. This redesign improves edge-to-edge resolution when shooting wide open at f/1.4 and strengthens suppression of axial chromatic aberration in high-contrast conditions.
Physically, the lens is approximately 14% shorter and 20% lighter than the earlier DG DN model. In L Mount it weighs 530g, improving balance on modern full-frame mirrorless bodies.
Autofocus is driven by Sigma’s dual HLA system for faster and quieter focus actuation. Focus breathing has also been reduced, making framing shifts during focus pulls less noticeable in video applications.
A newly developed Advanced Amorphous Coating reduces flare and ghosting when shooting towards strong light sources.
Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art Lens for L Mount in More Detail
Refined Art Series Optical Design
The DG II features a redesigned 15-element, 12-group optical construction incorporating four aspherical and two SLD elements. This configuration improves edge consistency at f/1.4 while further reducing axial chromatic aberration, particularly in high-contrast areas.
On full-frame L-Mount bodies, the 35mm focal length provides a 63.4° angle of view, offering a natural perspective suited to documentary, portrait and event work.
Resolution remains consistent from centre to edge at maximum aperture. Colour fringing in both focused and defocused areas is better controlled compared to earlier generations, maintaining cleaner transitions between subject and background.
The 11-blade rounded diaphragm maintains circular aperture geometry when stopping down, supporting smooth defocus rendering. Minimum aperture extends to f/16 for greater depth-of-field control.
Close Focus and Framing
The minimum focusing distance is 28cm, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.4. This enables closer framing than many traditional 35mm f/1.4 designs, expanding compositional flexibility for detail work and environmental portraits.
Autofocus and Video
Sigma’s dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) system drives autofocus with speed and reduced operational noise, supporting both still photography and video recording.
Focus breathing has been minimised through optimisation of the focus group arrangement and aspherical profile. This helps maintain a more consistent angle of view during focus pulls.
The aperture ring includes both a click switch and lock mechanism, allowing smooth exposure adjustment when filming.
Construction and Handling
The L Mount version weighs 530g and uses a 67mm filter thread.
The reduced dimensions compared to the previous model improve balance across L-Mount bodies from Leica, Panasonic and Sigma. Construction combines aluminium components with TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), maintaining dimensional stability across temperature changes.
Dust- and splash-resistant sealing and a water- and oil-repellent front coating support outdoor use. A supplied petal-type hood with locking mechanism attaches securely.

Our Verdict
The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art for L Mount refines one of the system’s most versatile focal lengths. The redesigned optical construction improves consistency at f/1.4, which benefits commercial, documentary and large-format print work where edge detail matters.
For hybrid creators, reduced focus breathing and quiet autofocus improve reliability when recording video, while the more compact barrel makes the lens easier to carry throughout extended assignments.
At 530g, it remains substantial but better balanced than previous 35mm Art generations, particularly on modern L-Mount bodies. This generation feels more cohesive within the current mirrorless ecosystem while maintaining the character expected from a fast Art prime.
