Sigma 20mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens Black for L Mount in More Detail

High-Performance Optics in a Compact Lens

Despite its small size, the Sigma 20mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens delivers optical quality that holds up to the demands of today’s high-resolution sensors. The optical design consists of 13 elements in 11 groups, including one FLD, one SLD and three precision glass-moulded aspherical elements. Together, these reduce chromatic aberration, suppress sagittal coma flare, and maintain sharpness and clarity across the entire frame, even at the widest f/2 setting.

A 9-blade rounded diaphragm produces pleasing background blur when used at wider apertures, and Sigma’s nano-porous and Super Multi-Layer Coatings help reduce flare and ghosting in bright or backlit conditions, improving contrast and colour accuracy.

Ultra-Wide Field of View with Everyday Usability

This 20mm prime offers a 94.5° angle of view on full-frame cameras, which is ideal for landscapes, cityscapes, interiors and night skies. Unlike some ultra-wide options, it is very small and handles easily enough for day-to-day photography as well. With a weight of just 370g and a length of 72.4mm, it if perfect on smaller mirrorless bodies, giving photographers an ultra-wide field of view without the size and weight typically associated with ultra wide lenses.

A minimum focusing distance of just 22cm also provides useful close-up capabilities, and the 1:6.7 magnification ratio allows for creative perspective in smaller spaces.

Excellent Low-Light and Astro Capabilities

Thanks to its fast f/2 maximum aperture, the lens is a good option in low light, whether indoors, at night, or for shooting handheld. It allows more light to reach the sensor than a slower ultra-wide zoom, which helps to reduce the need for longer exposures or higher ISO settings. Astrophotographers also benefit from the lens’s ability to render point light sources with clarity, maintaining star shape across the frame while minimising coma flare and distortion.

Additionally, the wide aperture enables a shallower depth of field than many ultra-wide lenses, offering greater subject separation and more creative flexibility for both stills and video.

Contemporary Series Build with All-Metal Construction

As part of Sigma’s Contemporary series, the 20mm f/2 features a full metal barrel, lens hood, and magnetic lens cap, with precisely knurled surfaces on the focus and aperture rings for a high-end tactile experience. Every component, from the exterior to internal mechanisms has been carefully machined to ensure durability with a minimalist aesthetic.

Despite the premium materials, it is impressively light, which is perfect for creators who want to travel light and it features a dust and splash-resistant mount, that adds to its usability in the field.

Filter Friendly and Included Accessories

Unlike many ultra-wide lenses, this 20mm accepts 62mm screw-in filters, which is excellent for landscape photographers who rely on polarisers and ND filters. The lens is supplied with a plastic lens cap and a magnetic metal cap, which attaches easily for quick protection on the move. A lens hood is also included for improved flare control and added protection when shooting outdoors.
