Product Summary

This is the kind of zoom that makes a full-frame kit easier to take everywhere. At 385g, it moves from expansive landscapes, architecture and interiors at 20mm through to people, street photography and everyday details at 60mm, without filling a bag with alternatives.

It also gets unusually close. Minimum focusing distance reaches just 15.8cm at 28mm, while 1:2.3 maximum magnification at 35mm brings food, flowers, products and smaller subjects right into the frame. At 60mm it still manages 1:2.9, giving useful working distance for detail shots.

A variable f/2.8-4 aperture balances brightness with portability, including f/2.8 at the widest setting for interiors, evenings and lower light. Three SLD and three aspherical elements maintain consistent sharpness throughout the range.

Hybrid creators get fast, precise HLA autofocus alongside suppressed focus breathing for more stable transitions during video. The result is a highly mobile everyday option for L-Mount photographers who’d rather carry one small zoom and concentrate on what they find along the way.

In More Detail

Consistent results across the zoom range

Optics include 15 elements in 13 groups, including three SLD and three special aspherical elements. This keeps sharpness consistent across the whole range, so moving between ultra-wide and a more natural perspective doesn’t mean losing quality at either end.

Impressive close-up capability

Close-up ability isn’t limited to a single focal length. Minimum focusing distance is 15.8cm at 28mm, with maximum magnification peaking at 1:2.3 at 35mm. This is near to half-macro reproduction. Even at 60mm it still provides 1:2.9, letting you fill the frame with smaller subjects while keeping more working distance.

Fast autofocus

A High-response Linear Actuator delivers fast, precise focusing with strong tracking for quick-moving subjects, including during high frame-rate capture. Operation stays quiet too, which matters just as much when recording audio alongside footage.

Controlled focus breathing for video

Changes in angle of view during focusing have been minimised, so framing stays stable when attention shifts between different parts of a scene. Pulls come out smoother and more natural during video recording.

Minimises flare and ghosting in backlight

Flare and ghosting have been tackled by Sigma’s ‘ghost busters’ through advanced simulation of incidental light. Strong resistance to flare helps maintain clarity when low sun, windows or artificial light sources are right in the frame.

Protection for outdoor use

A dust and splash-resistant structure pairs with a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element, making dirt and moisture far easier to deal with outdoors. It isn’t waterproof though, so care is still needed around significant water exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this compare to a 24-70mm?

Starting at 20mm rather than 24mm sounds like a small difference on paper, but in practice it changes what fits in the frame. Tight interiors, group shots, room tours and sweeping backdrops become easier without stepping backwards or switching optics. The trade-off is less reach, with 60mm rather than the 70mm of a conventional standard zoom.

Which cameras can I use it with?

This full-frame optic is made for L-Mount cameras, including compatible models from Leica, Panasonic LUMIX and Sigma.

Why choose this instead of carrying an ultra-wide and standard zoom?

The 20mm starting point reaches into ultra-wide territory while 60mm covers more natural everyday compositions. For travel, city breaks and days out, that can mean fewer lens changes and less equipment to carry.

Will this work well for someone upgrading from a kit lens?

Yes. The wider starting point, brighter maximum aperture and close-focusing ability go beyond what many kit zooms offer, while the compact dimensions keep it approachable for anyone stepping up for the first time.

Can it handle talking-head videos and wider establishing shots?

Yes. The 20mm end provides broad establishing views with plenty of surroundings, while 60mm gives a more natural perspective for tighter compositions of someone speaking to camera. Moving between them takes just a turn of the zoom ring.

Does it include a constant aperture throughout the zoom?

No. The maximum aperture varies from f/2.8 at 20mm to f/4 at 60mm, helping to balance useful brightness with the low weight and compact dimensions that are central to the design.

What size filters does it take?

It has a 67mm front filter thread for adding ND, polarising and diffusion filters.
