Product Summary
The most notable feature of this superzoom is not simply the 10x ratio, but where the range begins. Starting at an ultra-wide 20mm provides a wider field of view for landscapes, architecture, interiors and travel than all-in-one lenses beginning at 24mm or 28mm, before extending all the way to 200mm for portraits, details and distant subjects.
Portability is a significant part of the appeal. At 540g and 117.5mm long for Sony, it can replace several focal lengths without creating an excessively large setup. Close-up capability is equally useful, reaching 1:2 magnification throughout the 28-85mm range rather than restricting this to a single focal length. This enables tele-macro close-ups with half life-sized reproduction.
Autofocus is driven by an HLA linear motor for fast, accurate focusing, while the optical formula combines four aspherical, one FLD and three SLD elements to control aberrations across such an extensive range.

A 20mm starting point substantially broadens what can be captured without changing lenses, particularly when space is limited or a more expansive composition is required. At the opposite end, 200mm provides enough reach to isolate details and photograph more distant subjects, making the range particularly useful when travelling with minimal equipment.
This specific strength has just been recognised by EISA, which named it Travel Zoom Lens of the year 2026-2027, highlighting the additional versatility of beginning at 20mm rather than the more usual 24mm.
Half-Macro Close-Ups
Maximum magnification reaches 1:2 between 28mm and 85mm, providing much more substantial close-up capability than the existing PDP suggests. Different focal lengths can also change the character of the composition, from wider environmental close-ups to tighter views with less background included.
Minimum focusing distance reaches just 16.5cm at 28mm, while distances across the overall range extend from 25cm at the wide end to 65cm at 200mm.
Compact Optical Design
Eighteen elements are arranged in 14 groups, including one FLD, three SLD and four aspherical elements. High-refractive-index materials also reduce the amount of movement required internally while zooming, contributing to the relatively slim construction despite the extensive focal range.
HLA Autofocus
A High-response Linear Actuator moves the focusing group quickly and accurately, helping with spontaneous subjects and changes in shooting distance. Its linear operation also suits hybrid use where smooth, unobtrusive focusing is preferable.

Does it have optical stabilisation?
No. There is no optical stabilisation built into the lens, although compatible Sony cameras can provide in-body image stabilisation.
Can it be used on APS-C Sony cameras?
Yes. It is compatible with Sony E-mount APS-C bodies, where the 1.5x crop provides an angle of view equivalent to approximately 30-300mm on full-frame.
Can it be used for macro photography?
It is not a dedicated macro lens, but reaches 1:2 maximum magnification from 28mm through to 85mm. This provides useful half-macro capability for flowers, food, details and other smaller subjects.
Is the variable aperture suitable for low-light photography?
The maximum aperture reduces from f/3.5 to f/6.3 as focal length increases, prioritising zoom range and portability over low-light performance. A faster prime or constant-aperture zoom may therefore be preferable when available light is limited or very shallow depth of field is a priority.

- Like New – The equipment is in a condition as if you have just bought it from the manufacturer. The item is still considered to be ‘Like New’ even without the original packaging and accessories. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect working order. Lenses are optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect excellent order.
- Cameras – Should have no marks on the LCD screen
- Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements and optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
