Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for L-Mount Summary
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for L-Mount is a wide-aperture standard zoom lens, which is designed exclusively for APS-C format mirrorless cameras like the Leica CL and Sigma fp L in crop mode. It delivers a 25.5-60mm full-frame equivalent zoom range, which is ideal for stills and video with a variety of subjects including architecture, interiors, portraits, landscapes, street and video content.
With a constant f/1.8 aperture, this zoom offers excellent control over depth of field and is adept at low-light situations. It’s also aimed at hybrid creators who need great optical performance, with sharp results across the frame, good contrast, and effective correction of aberrations. Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating minimises flare and ghosting for clearer images in backlit conditions, and there’s a dust and oil repellant coating on the front element.
The compact size and 535g weight ensure this a portable and lightweight L-mount lens, while the compact 67mm front filter thread is a benefit for anyone with existing filters or square filter systems. An internal zoom design keeps the lens length constant during zooming, which maintains balance for a gimbal or rig. For video users, the lens includes a de-clickable aperture ring, aperture lock, and reduced focus breathing, which are all features that enhance usability when you want to capture professional-looking footage.

Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for L-Mount in More Detail
Constant aperture zoom lens with Prime Performance
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art offers image quality comparable to a prime lens across the entire zoom range. It maintains an f/1.8 maximum aperture throughout, allowing for excellent low-light control with strong background separation.
Four high-precision aspherical and four SLD elements help to reduce axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare, providing high resolution and accurate detail, even when shooting wide open.
Expanded Zoom Range with APS-C Coverage
Compared to the well-known 18-35mm f/1.8 Art, this updated lens extends the wide end to 17mm and reaches 40mm at the telephoto end. The result is a more versatile 25.5-60mm full-frame equivalent range, allowing you to capture everything from landscapes to portraiture without needing to switch lenses.
Improved Handling with Lighter, More Compact Design
The 17-40mm f/1.8 is significantly lighter and more compact than its predecessor. It weighs around 535g and is compatible with 67mm threaded lens filters. The zoom also benefits from an inner zoom mechanism, so the barrel length stays constant during zooming and focusing, which improves balance on gimbals while helping to protect the lens from dust and moisture intrusion.
Lens Coatings and All-Weather Construction
Flare and ghosting are minimised thanks to the use of Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating, which helps to maintain contrast and clarity in backlit conditions. A dust and splash-resistant structure also adds durability, with a water and oil-repellent coating on the front element for easier cleaning after shooting outdoors.
Optimised Autofocus and Focus System
The lens uses Sigma’s well known HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) to deliver fast, quiet and precise autofocus. This is ideal for both video and stills, especially when used on a gimbal or with eye or face detection tracking. Focus breathing is reduced too, enabling consistent framing when pulling focus during video.
Lens Barrel Controls
An aperture ring is included for exposure control, with de-click via a switch to allow smooth, silent adjustment while recording video. A separate lock switch prevents accidental changes to the aperture during shoots. The lens also includes two AFL buttons (assignable on compatible bodies) and a manual focus switch for quick changes while shooting.
Additional Features
- Compatible with the Sigma USB Dock UD-11 (for L-Mount)
- Supports switching between linear and non-linear focus ring settings (L-Mount only)
- Each lens is individually tested using Sigma’s proprietary MTF measuring system

Our Verdict
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art for L-Mount offers a unique fast aperture with a flexible zoom range for crop-sensor mirrorless cameras. On bodies like the Sigma fp L (in APS-C mode), it provides a 25.5-60mm equivalent angle of view, covering a broad spread of wide to short telephoto subjects. This makes it an ideal everyday lens for photographers and videographers who want consistent performance without switching lenses.
Optically it holds up to Sigma’s high Art Series standards, with excellent sharpness, minimal distortion, and effective control of chromatic aberration, which is on par with primes. Users gain the benefits of a fast prime across the zoom range, helping to reduce their kit weight while still being a zoom for anything from portraits, to b-roll, and low-light situations.
At just around 535g with a compact size, the lens balances well on smaller L-Mount cameras, while the compact 67mm thread offers affordable filter compatibility. Video features include well-controlled focus breathing, a physical aperture ring with de-click and lock options, and internal zooming for gimbal balancing.
With weather sealing and a water and oil repellent front element, this is a reliable, high-performance zoom that’s ideal hybrid users.
