Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E in More Detail

First ever f/1.4 aperture full-frame 14mm lens
The groundbreaking Sigma 14mm F1.4 DG DN | Art lens is the world’s first f/1.4 mirrorless lens with such an expansive angle-of-view. With a brighter aperture, it outshines its predecessor, the 14mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art for DSLRs, allowing 58% more light onto the sensor. This exceptional optic excels in capturing the night sky and delivers remarkable handheld performance in low-light environments.
Optimised for astrophotography
Designed with astrophotography in mind, the Sigma lens boasts an advanced optical configuration featuring 1 SLD, 3 FLD, and 4 aspherical elements. This meticulous design ensures exceptional optical quality at infinity focus, effectively minimising aberrations and sagittal coma flare.
As a result, brilliant points of light remain impeccably round and sharp across the entire frame, even at wide apertures. Leveraging in-camera optical aberration control profiles, distortion and vignetting are corrected effortlessly. Furthermore, the lens’s sophisticated optical design eliminates corner softness and chromatic aberration, reducing the need for digital corrections. This selective approach to optical aberration control provides a relatively compact and lightweight lens for its type, without compromising on image quality.

Professional features with superb build quality
The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E has a professional feature-set, which makes it easier for photographers and filmmakers to achieve the best results possible. An aperture ring is built into the barrel, which can be set to autofor aperture control on the camera. With a very precise action, the ring can also be de-clicked if preferred, or locked in place to prevent it from being accidentally knocked.

Heat retainer for cold environments
At the front of the barrel is a Lens Heater Retainer, which was a feature introduced on the Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG DN | Art. This helps to hold a heat strip in place to prevent condensation build-up on the front element, which are often used by astrophotographers when shooting in cold conditions.
Rear filter holder with new lens storage cap
The lens features a rear filter holder that allows sheet-type filters to be attached with ease. Soft type filters are often preferred by astrophotographers as they make stars appear softer, larger and brighter and you can also use other types of sheet-type filter.
Sigma has specially designed a new front lens cap with rear sheet filters in mind. Two filter slots are available to store pre-cut sheet-type filters, allowing them to be carried with the lens at all times. Previous lenses such as the 14mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art used a push fit type cap. The new front cap now features a secure lock mechanism to prevent it from falling off unintentionally.

Manual focus lock and customisable AFL button
A MFL (manual focus lock) switch on the side of the lens barrel allows astrophotographers to find infinity then switch the MFL switch to Lock, which completely disables the focus ring. This means that even if the ring is knocked the focus will remain at infinity, preventing accidental out-of-focus results when least expected.
An AFL button is also included on the lens barrel, which can be customised depending on your particular camera.

Included tripod collar
With a hefty weight to the lens, Sigma has negated the typical front-heavy shooting experience when mounted to a heavy-duty tripod, by including the TS-141 Tripod Socket, which ensures a more balanced set-up closer to the centre of gravity and benefits from an Arca-Swiss compatible mount.
Fast, smooth focusing
The 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E is fitted with Sigma’s new High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) motor, which delivers faster, smoother, quieter and more accurate focusing than a stepping motor. This is only the third Sigma lens to be designed with this technology, ensuring very responsive focusing in all shooting situations.

Our Verdict
Sigma has pushed the boat out with the addition of this ultra wide angle prime lens, which joins the prestigious Art Series line-up as the world’s brightest 14mm option for mirrorless users. With its ultra-bright aperture and expansive focal width, the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E opens up a new world of creativity. Capture the breathtaking allure of nightscapes, sprawling landscapes, bustling cityscapes and the intimate details of interior spaces, all with a single highly capable prime lens.
Optical performance is extremely high across the frame and at all apertures, with a design housing eight special elements, which are tuned for astrophotography in particular. This allows the lens to render minimal aberrations and sagittal coma flare, as well as reduced chromatic aberration even towards the edges of the frame, with uniformly spectacular results.
An all-new HLA focus motor offers faster and quieter performance when shooting in AF, with a system which is fully compatible with Sony AF assist functions. For precise manual focus control, a Manual Focus Lock allows you to gain focus, then switch off the MF completely to minimise accidental focus shifts. The aperture ring is de-clickable for video and the lens hood has also been redesigned, with a locking function as well as two sheet filter holders for the rear filter mount.
Naturally you’ll find comprehensive weather sealing, oil repellent and SMC coatings, along with all of the benefits, which Sigma’s premium lenses offer to enthusiast and professional content creators.
