It offers content creators, Virtual Reality producers and business users a lightweight, durable magnesium alloy camera to capture stunning 60 megapixel 360º photos and immersive 360º videos up to 5.7K / 30fps. You can also record slow motion in 4K 60fps, perfect for cinematic scenes to complement your movies and VR content.
Ricoh has enhanced the useability of the THETA X with their first action camera to include a 2.25-inch touchscreen display, a replaceable Rechargeable Battery DB-110 and the ability to record to microSDXC cards. Smartphone control via Bluetooth further extends updated user-friendly features, as does the ability to power the camera over USB-C, perfect for long-form content, live streaming and more.

Significantly improved operation with 2.25-inch touchscreen
The RICOH THETA X includes a large user-friendly 2.25 inch TFT colour LCD with 360 x 640 dots. This enables you to preview the scene before capture, adjust shooting settings and view captured images. Vastly improved shooting efficiency now comes from a range of features available directly from the camera without the need for a smartphone.
360-degree high-resolution still image and video capture
The CMOS image sensor, main processor and lens design have all been renewed. It is now possible to capture high-resolution 360-degree images with a maximum resolution of approximately 60MP, thanks to a new 1/2.0 type sensor with approximately 48MP. Two image sizes are available to match the scene you’re shooting, with 11K for high-resolution brightly lit indoor photography and 5.5K images perfect for darker situations.
Enhanced image stabilisation helps capture vivid and smooth 360º videos at 5.7K equivalent resolution (5760 x 2880 pixels) at 30 frames per second (fps).
Switch battery and memory cards
For the first time in the RICOH THETA series the RICOH THETA X is powered by an interchangeable battery and memory storage capacity can be increased by adding an external microSDXC card. This allows you to continue shooting without worrying about remaining battery levels or storage capacity.

The RICOH THETA X connects quickly and easily through wireless to a smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0, without the need to enter an SSID. Incorporated MIMO wireless communication technologies and real-time processing such as top/bottom correction is available while shooting videos. You can also transfer images and videos from the camera directly to a smartphone more quickly.
Improved expandability
The RICOH THETA X utilises an Android-based OS, allowing third-party developers to develop plug-ins to expand the functionality of the camera, harnessing the new touch panel monitor, to extend the scope for plug-in development.
It is now also possible to easily set up the ‘client mode’ (a mode used to directly connect the RICOH THETA to a wireless router) without using a smartphone. This allows plug-ins to be installed and firmware to be updated simply by operating the RICOH THETA X itself – without using a computer or smartphone.
Linking with image sharing services
The RICOH THETA X links with image sharing services provided by Ricoh to improve user workflows.

- Magnesium alloy exterior body, delivers robustness and excellent heat dissipation.
- The camera can be powered even when mounted on a tripod use without using an optional extension adapter, thanks to the addition of a USB Type-C port on the side of the body.
- Time Shift Shooting mode allows the photographer to capture an image without being in the frame. You can also capture up to 20fps in continuous shooting mode, when shooting 5.5K still images.
- A touch shutter function allows a photo to be taken by tapping on the touchscreen display in addition to pressing a shutter button.
- Images can be marked as favourites directly from the touchscreen, which can subsequently be viewed on the THETA smartphone app to save time.
- Still image playback orientation is now selectable and the RICOH THETA X features AI Auto which utilises AI recognition technology to identify the subject and display from that point.
- Exposure compensation and white balance can be adjusted with the camera itself prior to live streaming.
- Use the mode button on the camera to easily switch between shooting modes, which are still image, video, custom settings, live streaming and plug-in.

Our Verdict
Ricoh has been at the forefront of 360º content since developing their first camera back in 2013. This has culminated with the THETA X, a 360º camera which provides the most advanced capabilities to date. It sees the addition of exchangeable rechargeable batteries, a new large touchscreen and the ability to add MicroSD cards for longer recording and more data overall. Inside the camera we also see an updated faster processor, new lens design with close focus of 40cm and a bright f/2.4 aperture. The sensor has also been updated, able to record engaging stills at up to 60 megapixels and a range of 360º video formats, which includes high speed 4K 60fps for slow motion playback and high quality 5.7K at 30fps.
You can now control the camera through the LCD screen, preview or mark favourite images, as well as controlling the THETA X using a smartphone App. This combines to improve useability significantly, speeding up your workflow whichever type of content you’re creating. Despite packing all of these new features into the tiny camera, it still weighs just 170 g (Including a battery and Micro SD card) and measures only 136.2mm high. This puts the power of 360º content into a device which easily fits in your pocket, with the ability make fully immersive stills and video at ultra high resolutions for your audience.

Condition guide
Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy.
- Like New – The equipment is in a condition as if you have just bought it from the manufacturer. The item is still considered to be ‘Like New’ even without the original packaging and accessories. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect working order. Lenses are optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect excellent order.
- Cameras – Should have no marks on the LCD screen
- Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements and optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen may have scratches or wear that is starting to affect the display.
- Lenses – May have slight dust inside that does not affect images. The mount shows signs of use.
- Well Used – The equipment will show significant signs of wear. The paintwork will be coming away in large areas exposing the metal work, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body.
- Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens.

This product has been thoroughly tested by our team of photographers and we are happy to give a 6 month warranty as a result. The number of tests depends on the individual product but we are confident in this product having tested all the major functions. Anything that isn’t as you would expect, we then make a note of and show this in the condition notes on the page.
