Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 Lens Summary

The L-mount lens range continues to grow with this Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 lens, which has been designed by Panasonic as one of four common-sized optics for L-mount mirrorless cameras. Weighing in at just 300g. the 50mm standard prime is well suited to a wide range of subjects from portraits to landscapes, general purpose shooting and also excels for video. Lumix full frame lenses feature complex optics to ensure high quality results, with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing off videographers. Smooth exposure changes can also be made with a micro-step aperture control, maintaining professional quality video for which Panasonic cameras are known.

Features at a glance

  • Excellent sharpness and resolution
  • Beautiful bokeh from a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm
  • Bright f/1.8 aperture suited to shallow depth of field and low light work
  • Compact and lightweight prime at just 82mm long and weighing 300g
  • Rugged dust/splash resistant design for any outdoor conditions

Nine lens elements in eight groups include three aspherical lenses, one ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lens and one UHR (Ultra-High Refractive Index). Combined these result in excellent sharpness, with well suppressed chromatic aberration in all sorts of shooting situations.

Those who shoot at close range get a minimum focal distance of 0.45m, which allows a decent level of close-up compositions at a 0.14x magnification. This does allow for another layer of versatility when capturing details or more abstract shots which a lens of this nature affords.

Looking to sell your Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 Lens for L-Mount?

Our Verdict

The number of lens options available for L-mount is considerable, with the addition of this Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 standard prime cementing the Alliance even further. Panasonic is actively prioritising convenient lens changes for film makers with this model being one of four planned similar-sized primes in the pipeline. The Lumix S 85mm lens is already out and a 24mm plus 35mm are in development. When any of these lenses is mounted on a gimbal or stabiliser, it can easily be swapped-out for another model in this series without resetting gimbal gears or making detailed adjustments to the rig. Filter threads are also commonly sized at a budget-friendly 67mm allowing users to purchase one filter system for all of these primes if desired.

Standard primes are always popular due to their versatility and compact designs and with an operating temperature down to -10C and comprehensive dust and moisture sealing the 50mm f/1.8 can be used confidently even if conditions head south. Results are top of everyone’s list with any lens and Panasonic has delivered a suitably advanced optical design, which ensures consistently sharp results whether shooting stills or videos. Of course there is the Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 which brings an even brighter aperture to the table, but that comes at a premium cost which will not appeal to everyone.

All things considered the Lumix 50mm f/1.8 makes an excellent choice for any photographer, videographer or hybrid content creator looking for a compact, lightweight and tough standard prime. It adds yet more convenience in being one in a series of four similar sized lenses, ideal for switching out whist maintaining extremely high quality results.
