Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena Lens Summary

With cutting edge optics and a design which takes full advantage of the wide Z mount, the Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena Lens is a premium full-frame prime lens for creative stills photography and video making. The 135mm telephoto focal width is ideal for portraits, nature, and commercial photography, as well as similar genres where you want to create striking subject separation and beautiful bokeh.

Nikon’s Plena lens features an 11-bladed circular diaphragm with a wide f/1.8 aperture, which renders flawless rounded bokeh and beautifully dramatic results at any aperture. Point light sources melt away with smooth defocus areas, which remain consistent right into the corners of the frame, enabling creators to concentrate on their artistry, while highlighting the subject.

Vignetting and colour fringing are virtually non existent thanks to the optical formula employed in this mirrorless Z lens, consisting of 16 elements in 14 groups, including 4 ED, 1 aspherical and 1 SR element. Meso amorphous and ARNEO coatings have also been integrated for brilliant results in various lighting conditions.

Despite offering such high quality results on Nikon mirrorless cameras, the Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena Lens weighs just 995g and accepts 82mm lens filters for greater control over the final results. This matches Nikon’s f/1.2 S-lenses from the range, such as the Z 50mm F/1.2 S and Z 85mm F/1.2 S, enabling you to share filters between optics. The joints, buttons and gasket are also extensively weather sealed, whilst a fluorine coating is applied to the external elements for cleaning and maintenance.

Flawless bokeh with exquisite rendering

Capture perfectly rounded bokeh even when shooting wide open at f/1.8 with the Nikkor Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena Lens, which features a wide f/1.8 11-bladed aperture design. This combination with special glass elements is able to render bokeh without cats eyes or onion rings, right into the corners of the frame.

Point light sources glisten as fine rounded points, before melting away with smoothly graduated bokeh, which remains consistently rounded into the corners of the frame. Whichever subjects you capture the Plena lens delivers the same stunning defocus results.

Cutting edge optical design

The cutting edge optical formula employed by Nikon for this telephoto prime lens includes 16 elements in 14 groups, with 4 ED, 1 aspherical and 1 SR element. These are responsible for rendering high image quality with well controlled artefacts and minimal colour fringing, enabling you to take advantage of the latest developments in optical technology for you work.

Various lens elements are also coated with Nikon’s latest optical coatings, which includes Meso amorphous and ARNEO anti-reflective coats to maintain contrast when shooting backlit subjects.

Striking subject separation

With its wide maximum aperture and medium telephoto focal width you can achieve brilliant subject separation within compressed images, unlike anything you’ve seen before. You don’t even need to stop the lens down to achieve high sharpness, detail and brightness.

Portable lens for stills and video creators

With a 995g weight and compact design measuring just 139.5mm long you can shoot handheld with ease when using Nikon’s Plena lens. This reaffirms its effectiveness for both stills and video and allows you to shoot without a tripod or camera gimbal as required.

Exposure control

An electromagnetic diaphragm ensures precise control over the aperture blades. This results in stable exposures during continuous shooting, while providing natural transitions when recording video.

Outdoor-ready

An extensive array of weather seals is used around the joints and buttons, as well as the rubber gasket on the lens mount. This helps to keep dirt, dust and moisture at bay, whilst the fluorine coating on the front element reduces the amount of debris for easy cleaning.

What’s more, the Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena Lens features an 82mm front filter thread, ensuring filmmakers and photographers can add whichever filters are required for their craft, from variable and solid ND filters to CPLs and protective UV filters.
