Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH Lens Silver Summary

When choosing any Leica M lens for your Rangefinder you are buying into a heritage, which spans over 150 years. The release of the new generation Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH Lens Silver is the culmination of this experience and Leica has enhanced their classic prime with a series of generational upgrades.

These include higher resolving power in order to reproduce infinitesimal detail which new generation sensors are capable of capturing, with cameras such as the M11 Silver and M11 Monochrom able to record an astounding 60 megapixels. Contrast is also enhanced, along with a closer 45cm minimum focusing distance and new 11-bladed aperture design. This renders beautifully rounded bokeh as well as gorgeous defocus areas in order to focus the viewer’s eye on your subject.

Despite these upgrades, the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH Lens dimensions remain unchanged from the previous model which weighs a mere 377g for perfect balance on the body.

Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH Lens Silver in More Detail

A modern masterpiece

The new generation Leica Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 ASPH. Lens in fetching silver finish has been designed to meet the demands of high resolution sensors found in cameras such as the Leica M11 Monochrom, which was release alongside this lens. The standard prime resolves 60 megapixels of incredible detail which fourth generation Rangefinders capture, along with high-contrast results, in almost any situation.

Close 45cm minimum focus distance

Detailed close-ups are possible with the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 thanks to a double cam mechanism and a minimum focusing distance of 45 centimetres. Leica engineers developed the mechanism in order to also increase the rotation range of the distance ring compared to the previous lens model.

This facilitates extremely easy and convenient focusing over the entire range, particularly in the close-up range, with distances as short as 70cm handled via the rangefinder. For the extended close-up range of 70 to 45 centimetres, you can focus via Live View on the screen, Visoflex or the Leica FOTOS App.

Intuitive and consistent photography

It was important to Leica that the new generation lens maintains the same physical dimensions the the previous model, which they successfully achieved. The new model weighs only 377 grams, despite packing an updated optical design and 11-bladed aperture diaphragm, where the previous model included 9-blades. This creates even rounder bokeh with beautiful defocus areas and that unmistakable Leica look. A modern rounded lens hood can be easily unscrewed for even more flexibility from the integrated design, which protects the lens, whilst increasing contract for backlit subjects.

Looking to sell your Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH Lens Silver?

Our Verdict

Whichever rangefinder you shoot with, the addition of a lens such as this new generation Silver Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH Lens can only add to your enjoyment. It offers higher resolving power than its predecessor in order to capture ever higher resolution images, and results show excellent contrast in the majority of situations.

It’s not only resolution which has changed, as Leica has also added an 11-bladed aperture diaphragm (over 9 previously), which can render beautifully rounded bokeh and smooth out of focus areas in the image. This is one of the most desirable traits of Leica lenses, especially when combined with the wide f/1.4 maximum aperture, which enables you to experiment with a shallow depth of field.

The minimum focusing distance has also been reduced to 45cm when using the FOTOS App, Live view or an optional camera Visoflex. This opens more creative avenues to capture wonderful frame-filling details and close-up images. Build quality and overall size remain similar to the previous model, which ensures you will enjoy many years of service from a versatile, robust and high resolving optic. The hardest decision is to choose between this silver model and the all black Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH.
